Can You guys please tell me if there is an electronic distributer other than the Pertronics setup i can use on my 1970 F250 360 engine that i could easily install i heard i could use the 1977 LTD distributer??? but iam not sure anyhow if someone can tell me what and how i need to do it i would greatly appreciate it I just cant deal with my points setup any more please help thanks
Rats right. You can get the Duraspark for an OEM application. If yer going after market you can try Purtronics(sp) or Unilite. I have the Unilite. It replaces the points by using an optical setup. Real quick and easy change out. Only draw back is it uses a unique rotor.
Hey Rat, do you have to get the wire harness when converting to the Duraspark?
Hi, I once considered the duraspark. I decided that the different model years, grommet colors, wiring was too much trouble. I put in a MSD 6A box. I am still using the points distributor but have a later model distributor that I'll drop in later. The MSD can be used with either one. The MSD definitely made my 70 390 run better. I also bought the optional timing avdvance unit that allows you to vary the timing from inside the cab while you drive. Will hook it up soon.
The Duraspark II works very well. I have used the one I installed on my 1970 390 FE motor for the past 5 years and it has never given me a bit of trouble. I used the setup from a 1975 model, and yes, you need to yank the under hood section of the wiring harness. Hook up is easy(see Chilton's Ford pickups manual #6913, page 69)all you will need to do is supply power to the Duraspark box and coil when the ignition is turned on. I only used one wire on the original 3 prong connector side of the harness(the red one). The other connector, the four prong, connects to the distributor and coil Via the donor harness. Of course you have to use the same year distributor(in my case a 1975) and spark box to match.
I have also found that platinum plugs work very well in this setup. I changed my first set at 29,000 plus miles and they looked like new.
I used to be a stout defender of points, you know "I can fix these babies on the side of the road " and such, but with better electronics we have available in this day and age I can't see any reason to stick with points.
I've heard that some of the stock duraspark units offered a 'start retard' that retards the spark while you crank the engine. I'd check into that because they'll start a lot easier.
