Front cab mounts

Has anyone had to replace the front cab mounts on your truck? I have a '68 F100 and the mounts are rusted at the points where the rubber bushings are attached. I was going to use polyurethane for the bushings but it looks like I will need to replace the mounts first. I looked in the JC Whitney catalog and they have a set that is supposed to bolt over the stock mounts, and I think Dennis Carpenter and Mac's sell original type replacements. Has anyone any experience with this and do you bave any tips to make the job easier?

I have been involved in 3 complete restorations of these year model trucks. One of these trucks had the cab mounts rusted out. Usually these mounts rust our only where the bushing have been sitting. I assume yours are rusted there also. If this is the case, you can remove the rusted metal and weld in some 3" flat washers. This will be stronger than the mounts were from the factory. Also, depending on if you get the washers welded in at the original mounting height, you might have to put some washers in between your bed and frame to compensate for the difference. Let me know if you have any other questions. I have run into about everything with these trucks.

Thanks for the tip, if I can't find washers that size can I use some plate steel instead? I do have a mig welder, I had to weld in some floor patches earlier this year. Did you use the rubber mounts or go with the polyuretane ones?

You can use steel plate, its just that the washers are generally easier to work with since they have the right size hole for the bolt to pass through. These washers are easy to find at hardware stores. I used the rubber mounts.

Also, I wouldn't consider buying the steel mount replacements, they are expensive and you will have a stronger mount by doing what I am telling you. I would spend that money on something that will actually show up on the exterior of the truck.

Been there, done that. Don't buy the bolt over replacements- total junk and wast of money. Get the ones from Dennis Carpenter. This will require completetly taking out the old rusted metal and welding in the new ones. When I finished mine you could not tell that they were replacements.

Thank's, when I do this can I just jack up the corner I'm working on after un-bolting the mount, then weld in the washer or do you have to raise the whole cab all at once?
Also, on the drivers side rear shock mount the stud is stripped. I tried to use a die to re-thread it but its still not very strong. Can I cut it off and use a bolt?

You should be able to jack one side of the cab up at a time to do this. I have always done this with the cab off, since I was doing a complete restoration. Note that you will have to take out the gas tank in order to remove the back cab bolts.

Also, what I would do about the stripped shock stud is to cut it off and find a similiar shoulder bolt and weld it in it place to the frame. This should work just fine.

Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Jarrod

Thank's again for the info, this is something I'm planning on doing this summer, now I can start looking for the washers and replacement parts to do the job.
