I have a 1971 F-250 Camper Special. It's been in the family since
1973. I am putting a 1978, 460cu in. engine in the truck. The transmission is also a 1978 C-6 automatic transmission. My problem is the speed odometer cable in 1971 is threaded on both the transmission and on the speed odometer display in the dash. The 1978 C-6 tramsmission has a clip type cable fitting on the transmission. I have both the 1971 and 1978 speed odometer cables. How can i swap ends on the cable so the 1978 transmission fitting will work on the C-6 and the dash unit will screw into the dash unit.
I have the same problem, we have a shop in town that can make custom speedo-cables (or modify an old one). I havent got it done yet but I got a estimate of $15.
After that, I think its just a matter of finding the right gear on the end to make it read correctly, I hope
Hi, I have never seen a cable that has a threaded end on the transmission side. My 70 with a 4 speed has the round end that slides into the tranny and is held in by the retainer and 1/4 in. bolt. I have had new cables made by a local speedometer shop.
I put a 1990 E40D automatic overdrive trans in my 1970 F100 4x4 and had to have a cable made. Since I live on the plains of Kansas, with no speedo shop around, I have my son find one in Las Vegas NV where he is stationed. It cost 50 bucks, and works perfectly.
Look around online, there are places who will make these for about the same price.
I guess I should have spelled it out... There is a local "general mechanic" shop that also does custom cables (along with rewiring electric motors, ETC).
This shop is right in the middle of the plains of kansas (McPherson to be specific)
Hehe.. that ain't the REAL plains When I say the "plains" i'm talking about jackrabbits, prairie dogs, antelope, yucca plants and tumbleweedsWelcome to Western Kansas
