1971 460 swap

I know this has been covered before, so if someone could tell me where to find the article, that would be helpful. I have a 1978 lincoln town car with a 460 engine, I want to install this engine and trans in my 1971 F100 2WD,my truck currently has a 390/C6 in it. What parts will I need and where do I get them? Are they available from FOMOCO? Thanks in advance. Dave

Swap Parts...............

There is little if anything available directly from Ford that will help you in this swap. But, there isn't an awful lot that you will need, so that makes it easier. The biggest problem you are facing is new motor mounts for the truck to set the engine in. You will need to find a set from a 1973 to 1979 Ford Pickup. Each side has 3 pieces and you need them all. If the rubber pads are bad in the ones you find at the local pick and pull, you can get new ones at your local NAPA store. Just remember to ask for the same year pads as the donor truck was. The mount on the rear, (trans. mount), is the same and you should be able to use the one off your C-6 that is in the truck now. Depending on what length of tail stock is on your present transmission, after you install the trans from the Lincoln, you may need to have the drive line shortened or lengthened at your local drive line shop. Other than the above, this is an easy swap and this is all there is to it. Be sure to change your heater and radiator hoses while at it and you shouldn't have any trouble enjoying the new extra cubic inches.......... Good Luck!

You say each side has 3 pieces, is this including the frame stands, or will my FE ones work? Thanks, Dave

460 rubber insulators and brackets are not the same as 360/390 rubber insulators and brackets.

You will also need the rear engine mount bracket from a 1973/79 F100/350 460 and its corresponding trans rubber insulator.

Neither of these parts are the same as any 1972 or earlier F100/350 uses.

The following Ford part numbers are for their description purposes only, as all the parts are now obsolete.

1973/79 F100/350 460 C6 ONLY / 1980 and later is different and > > 1975/90 Econoline 460 parts are not the same, will not work.

D3TZ6028A right & D3TZ6029A left Towers aka perches, stands, engine supports.

D3TZ6030A right & D3TZ6031A left Motor Mount Brackets. These fit between the rubber insulators and the engine block.

2) D3TZ6038A .. R/L Front Engine Rubber Insulators.

D3TZ6A023A .. Rear Engine aka Transmission Bracket / Bolts onto the frame / Some ppl refer to this as a crossmember.

D3TZ6068C .. Transmission Rubber Insulator.

The 460 was not available in 1972 and earlier F100/350's. 1973 was the first year.

These parts will work. I sold dozens of these Genuine Ford parts to customers in the 1970's and 1980's with 1972 and earlier trucks...when there were no aftermarket sources suppling them.

In fact, I sold so much of this jazz over the years, that I typed all this info "off the cuff."

It was a very common practice to replace a worn out 360/390 with a rebuilt/reman Ford 460 assembly in many 1967 to 1972 Pickups during the last half of the 70's and even through the 80's. Much more power and everyone wanted one! All you need is Mounts and it's an easy swap.... The rubber mount parts are available from several sources, but the metal is NOT. You can find Hot Rod companies selling their own fabricated mounts for exorbitant prices....and usually not as good as the old Ford perches. But it is a source if you can't find a set in a pick and pull close to you. The Ford perches are as strong or stronger than the Hot Rod ones. If you have built the 460 so strong it will "kill" a set of Ford perches, you don't have a chance that the Hot Rod ones will last!

LMCtruck.com Book # FB.40

Page 49

Item # 48-0368 is a direct bolt in kit to Mount a 460 in a 65-72 2wd Truck.

I do not work or represent LMC at all. I just been a very happy customer with them over the years

I have a set of 460 frame stands and insulators on the way from Lance65. The 460 engine I'm installing is from a 1978 lincoln town car, will I be able to use the original engine mounts? Will I have to change the shift arm on the C6 trans in order for the linkage to be right? Thanks, Dave
