I have a 68 250 ranger thats runnin rough. it hard to start, idles and runs rough, has no power going up hills and when you jab the accelarator, it kinda cuts out before it gets up and goes ive asked different opions from different people and ive heard everything from a bad valve to a hole in the piston. ive changed the plugs, cap, rotor, points, and wires. ive tired timing it by ear but with very little improvement. Does anyone have any idea whats causing it or is it my worst fear and a bad valve? Or could it be the accelerator pump ? I havent checked it yet. Please help!!!

Possibly a carb/fuel problem. May be it is time to get a carb kit and clean and rebuild the carb. A rebuild really isnt too hard, especially if it is a 2 barrel carb
Could also be a vaccuum leak, that could cause all those probs too.
The most common problem on a Ford (autolite) 2 barrel carb is a bad power valve or bad accellerator pump. Pop the carb off and replace them. The accell. pump can be done with the carb in place, but the powervalve, you have to take the carb off. remove it, take the 4 screws off the cover on the bottom. If you get gas(wet)It's bad. These parts come in a kit or can be gotten separate. Since you've done all the rest, invest in a kit and overhaul it. You will be glad you did. if this doesn'yt cure the problem, do a dry, then wet compression check. A burned valve will make it run rough also. If you burned a hole in a piston, you'd kill every mosquito in a 5 state area! You'd know that for sure!!
Could be a fuel filter clogging up. That got rid of my hesitation on my 390. Or maybe the choke (butterfly) is sticking. Pull the air cleaner and spray carb cleaner all around the butterfly and it's linkage while the engine is revved up.
My 67 Camper Special was running a little rough. I did a tune up and it was a little better. A mechanic told me to get a new carb. I did, and it runs great. I am no expert, but more folks I talk to say it's worth the extra $$ to go ahead and get the new carb. Avoid rebuilt.
thanks guys but ya know before I got a chance to even look at The carb the thing started backfiren on me! It used to bakc fire when it got up to around 40 but not as bad as it does now. any ideas on whats causing the backfireing?
If its backfiring...its probably the ignition system. I am assuming that you still have points...if so, it's time to change them. My truck backfired so bad one day before I changed mine...it blew the seam apart on a BRAND NEW muffler
