timing

I have a 1979 F250 trailer special.
Dropped a new 400 in it last june.
The only vacumn I have hooked up is Brakes dist pickup trans heater.
My question is does any one know what my timing should be set at?
I shold mention it is a 2 barrel

Try setting it at 6 degrees BTDC. Then, drive it and keep bumping it up about 2 degrees until it starts pinging. From there, drop it back 2 degrees or so and it should be fine. I think the final timing setting will be around 6-8 degrees BTDC.

Your calibration code is 7-74-R10

Timing is 12* BTDC

You can view the specs on this page.

Just look for that code in the 2 nd half of this page.

I just realized that the above diagram is for a California application.

I am presently trying to upload a copy of the actual vacuum diagram you need.

When you get the timing set, I am curious to hear if you can actual run 12 degrees of timing without pinging when using 87 octane gas. This new gas is really bad as far as pinging is concerned.

You really should get the vacuum advance working to help with pinging and gas mileage.
