clunk clunk clunk!

i have a 1995 F150 5.0 4x4 reg cab 8'bed
i just had both u joints replaced and am still getting a sickening clunk from underneath the floor when i accelerate even moderately.

it was suggested to me that this might be raidius arm bushings but they dont look like they have been moving.
have any of you ever had this issue or can you help it would be appriciated

Check your driveshaft/transmission mating splines, mine had a terrible clunk at even light acceleration, replaced bushings on sway bars, front bushings, and the spring perches, only when I took the driveshaft out to check/replace u-joints, did I realize that the yoke could move dang near a 1/4" up and down! Packed the splines with grease and no more clunk.

Something to check anyway.

Ive had the same clunk problem even after changing u-joints. i never thought of checking the driveshaft splines. What kind of grease do you put in there? anything special? thanks

wheel bearing grease will do, anything will do so long as it's not graphite. It's only ATF in the transfer case, it's compatible with just about anything, that's made of petroleum.

Technically you're supposed to replace the yoke, and since a junkyard one might be just as bad, new is the only way to go, but not for $85 plus tax.

I've been doing this for 2 years, repack every 6-9 months, depending upon usage, with no clunk and no adverse effects, minus taking my driveshaft off (4 bolts) every now and then.

I think there is also a TSB on the tranny mount. A fairly simple fix and can be done in a flat driveway with a jack and sockets. I saw it listed on the main website here.

tranny mount is smomething i was thinking too ...it litterally sounds like someone is hitting the floor with a hammer, it only does it from a standing start or from a very slow rolling start (like making a pittsburgh left at a red light).

I had what sounds like the same problem. Did the fix as outlined in the TSB. Only took about 30 minutes. After the fix drove about 20 minutes and it gave one last big clunk.
Have not had the problem since. Now has about 3000 miles and still no clunks. Can't find the procedure, but think I found it at this website. Was a nice write up with pics and step by step instructions.

I can't find the artical either. It basically says to park the truck level with wheels straight. Put a jack under the tranny and take the weight off the mount. loosen the tranny to mount bolts and loosen mount to frame bolts. turn steering lock to lock then return to center. Tighten frame bolts then tranny bolts, release jack and Done.

sound right fmr9?

Check the radius arm bolts just for the heck of it, my 2wd truck at work did the same thing. Under acceleration or even going over some bumps there would be an almost tooth jarring bang when the arm slide around in the mounting bracket.

Sounds right. Think it also said to leave tranny in nuetral during the procedure.
Sure worked wonders for my truck.

you probably don't have this problem but on my 96 the rear leaf spring shakle braket rusted out so the spring was hitting the bottom of the bed.

In some cases it's also the slip joint on the driveshaft at least for my '89 F-150. When there's not enough lube it binds and clunks.
