87-96 questions

Hello hello. noobie here, former ford owner maybe new old future ford owner.
Can you guys tell me what model year Ford stopped using the 9-inch rear end in the 150 trucks. I'm thinkin about gettin a SWB F-150 with that sweet 300/6cyl
and was wondering how far back I had to go to get the 9-inch rear end.

You'll have to go back to 83 or 84 for the 9". You can also buy a 1991 or older truck and swap one in if you're set on having a 9".

unger316, andym, thanks for the info. I just got rid of a dodge truck and I,m
thinking of its replacement. I like the 80's style front ends, but I also like the early 90,s front ends. I'm thinking I should find a carburated truck to simplify any future mods and the 9-inch rear sure would be a plus.

The 8.8 isn't a bad rear end at all unless your future mods are going to be over 500 HP or something. Or I guess a 9 inch would be nice if you were going to bog the crap out of it everyday or go rock climbing but then the rear end tearing up would be the least of your worries.

biggreentank, my future truck WILL have a 4.9/6cyl. 500hp, I dont know if I have that much money. I guess I'm old school and just wanting the good old 9-inch. I'm sure the 8.8 would do all I would ever ask I just wondered when the 9 went away.

Nope - you have to be a supporting member to get your signature attached. Otherwise you have to hold your mouse cursor over "signature" in the upper right hand corner of your post.

it will be well into the future, if ever, that you will have a 4.9/6cyl. achieve 500 hp., that is totally unrealistic.

Actually, a better rear that the ford 9" is the 10.25" or 10.50" sterling. WHile it has less aftermarket support than the 9", it's essentially indestructable. Especially behind a 4.9L, modified or not.

For the record, 1987 is the last year for the 9" rear, although by the mid-'80s they were getting fairly rare. And even though I know the 8.8" is good enough for most factory applications, I fully intend to swap my '89 F-150 to a 9" as soon as I find one, because IMO, it's SO much easier to work on a removable-carrier differential than to fiddle around on your back trying to do precision work.

My 2¢...

What had a 9 inch in 87? I've never seen an F-150 or Bronco with one after the really early 80's. Did they put them in Lincolns or something?

No car after 1979 (Town Cars and Coupes, LTD IIs, T-birds, and Cougars were the last) got the 9"...ONLY the half-ton trucks and Broncos got them after that. Right after I got my truck in '01, I passed up a 9" rear (and corresponding Dana 44 front to match) with a 3.50 gear out of an '85 Bronco in a junkyard, figuring I'd surely have another opportunity. I have seen ONE '87 with a 9", but the fella that was putting gas in the truck at the time might not have appreciated me yanking his rear axle.
