that is some bling stuff there ivan, are you still holding strong to waiting to use the giggle gas? i see him useing it on cam break in.
Well I don't think my rear driveline will withstand the naturally aspirated engine output, let alone the nitrous so I'm going to do my best not to play with the laughing gas until the new tranny and drivelines are done. I picked up an oddball t-case to tranny adapter that's extra long meaning I'll shorten the rear and lengthen the front shaft. It should give me a better angle on the front CV joint but I'll need to swap in a tranny with a longer output shaft (2wd I think) when I do this. Don't get me wrong, I may get stupid and use the nitrous anyway but I expect great carnage when I do.
There's a few mud drags around this summer so I'm hoping to beat on the new engine at one or two of those depending on timing.
Oh, as for what went wrong with the old engine . . . I don't have a friggin clue. About 100 miles out of Portland I started hearing a tapping noise coming from the engine. I sounded like valve adjustment so I pulled a cover when I got to St Helens to try and adjust it. The valves were all spot on, no excessive lash or anything. The tapping went away. Then later I started it and heard the tapping again. I sounded like it was on the passenger's side but we couldn't really place it. On the way back from the bog the tap came back again. I parked the truck and went back down a month later. When I tried to start it the "tap" had turned into a sickening knock that could be felt in the floor pan as it cranked over. I didn't bother any further for fear I was gonna lose a rod and have a piston destroy my aluminum heads. So I tore it all down in anticipation of a munched rod bearing. But we found nothing. NOTHING! I think possible Pro was under the hood tapping a hammer on my engine as I cranked so I'd hurry up and build the new one . . . who knows. A few bearings were scored but nothing too bad at all, certainly nothing that would cause such a nasty noise. But at that point all there was no going back so the 557 is on its way.
that is a great pirate thread right there I betting that when ivan hits the giggle gas go fast button that nice shinny new crank is gonna feel like ivan did when he got dinged in the twig n' berries when testing the cap'n's flex out .
Oh, there's a thread in here. Do a search for "crunch berries" and see what you come up with.
That crank will handle it just fine. They conservatively rate it to 1200hp and supposedly they're good past 1500. I'll be hitting about 1100hp with the nitrous so I'm well in the safe zone. I was planning to go with a billet crank originally but since this broke at the beginning of the year and not at the end I had to make some comprimises to get it done quick.
Hey, it survived the beating at the St Helens pit with almost 700hp surge when I had the nitrous going and my angle was nasty. I think if this new adapter works and I can extend the front shaft by 6-7" it'll make a BIG difference.
we shall see... i just know my shaft clearanced itself out over time becuse it was ran at full bind over a few years until it finally gave up....your front pinoin being turned up must help alot but i think we should start a thread taking bets on your front and rear drivellines
