I just recently purchased my first Ford truck. It's a 78 F-250 133" wb with a 400, C6, NP205, dana 44 front, and dana 60 rear. My question is, how can I tell if this truck originally had duel tanks? The bed has two fill doors with the front fill going to neverland, but inside the cab I can't seem to find any change-over switch. I'm curious if the bed has been changed or if the switch is just missing. I'd like to put the second tank back in if I could, but I don't want it to be more hassle then it's worth. Thanks for any help on this as the forums have already been a wealth of knowledge ( I just finished setting my headlights up on relay's this morning).
the fuel selector switch was sometimes on the drivers side floor by the bench seat on some trim levels and on the ranger and up models it was on the passenger side of the heater controls. also it is possible the bed was changes out.
Check the fuse panel. Is there a fuse and wires in the aux-fuel section of the panel. If not then it's safe to say it's the bed that's been switched out.
To add the second tank, you would need the wiring for the second tank, a tank with sending unit, a way to bolt the tank to the truck, brush guards if applicable, filler neck, a heater controller with the tank selector switch, a wiring diagram, the valve on the framerail, fuel hose, and the metal lines that go to the charcoal canister from the tank.
I would have a parts truck with dual tanks or a way of getting parts from a truck that has dual tanks, and have all the parts put aside before begining.
It's possible and would just require bolting things on, and some moderate skilled wiring in the fuse panel if the truck never had the aux tank.
Thanks for the info. I'll take a better look tomorrow and see what I can find. If I can't find a sign of the stuff for an aux tank then I'll just weld and fill that second door in and call it good.
