My truck has no place to put a stereo?I don't want to cut up the dash to install one, were is ceative place to put one?I was thinking of mounting a CD player under the seat and just having my satallite radio unit up on the dash.were do you crafty people put your stereo when there no hole for one in the dash thanks again
I read a post a while back about a company that had modern stereo equipment that looks like the original radio. That is one option. It does put a hole in the dash for what looks like the original radio. All of the "good stuff" is probably under the seat.
There is a company/brand called secret audio. Your idea sounds good with the CD player under the seat and XM radio, but sounds like you still need a stereo unit somewhere to push the speakers. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to break into these trucks so the more you have tucked in hard to reach spots is probably the better from a security standpoint.
Just my 2 cents.
Call me crazy, but I have been considering this setup-
Get a detachable face head unit. Solder a wire to each contact point on the faceplate, and connect these to the contact points on the deck itself. Make the wires as long as needed to mount the deck anywhere you want. A computer style ribbon cable would work great, and its small enough to hide.
I want to mount the faceplate to my sunvisor- flip the sunvisor down, push buttons, then flip it back up. The main part of the deck I want to mount vertically under the center speaker grille. Use a small hinge on the grille so you can flip it up to insert/remove a CD, then put it back down. No one will ever see a thing.
I was planning on building a custom headliner outta fibreglass, with the deck in the centre of it, along with 2 6" speakers in the back corners.
Or, in an issue of Classic Trucks, a 66 was lowered down, and with a custom gauge insert, it was sitting in that, beside the guages, If anyone is interested, PM me and I will tell you what issue it is in, I don't have it right now
I put mine in the glove box and use a remote. I made a replacement glove box out 18 guage steel and consturcted it so the head unit would only come out of the box throuhg the back. So if a prospective theif wants my stereo hes going to have to get the glove box loose then remove the heater box to get the glove box out and then remove the radio. Of course If I ever want to get it out for some reason I gotta do the same thing. I think anyone who has had there radio ripped before never wants it to happen again.
I'm constructing a center console that goes form the dash to the floor. with a hidden compartment for cd. player but visible will be my 8-track player, "yes it works," it's in my truck now. I want my truck to show old school style but I want the comfort of good sounding music. all speakers for cd will be hidden when upholstery get's done.
