I did something I've never done yesterday-I drove my daugher's 1994 Explorer on a long trip. I drove over 500 miles and upon arriving at my exit in Houston, her vehicle seemed to have lost power and was clattering (lifter sound) quite a lot. I attempted to accelerate and it lost more power so I let up on the accelerator and the clattering stopped and it would accelerate slowly. I got up to about 45 mph and held it there. When I turned into the subdivision, I attempted to accelerate and it started clattering again and losing power so I let up on the accelerator and it slowly got up to speed. Does anyone have a clue about what could be going on. It appears to be fuel related but why would it clatter? Thanks for your help.
Yeah it is definitely a problem, Cause I have the same damn problem except I just bought my explorer 2002 with 108000kms. And Im friggin confused. Right after I bought it the EGR sensor was bad and made my service engine light appear. Ive gotten that fixed but now I have slow acceleration and sometimes a thud or jerk when I release the pedal from accelerating. The ratteling starts at about 50-60km/hr and stops when I release the acceleration. If I drive slow then its smooth but when I want power it isnt there and it rattles. Im really p'd as I just bought it. I hope someone could shed some light on this problem.
Before doing anything i would change the spark plugs first to be safe..I had a problem with my 00 X about 9k miles after an overhaul of just about everything imagineable..started idleing funny..not enough that anyone else noticed..but enough that i knew about it..at about 40mph when it shifted into OD when i was light on the pedal it would feel like it were going to stall...and was bucking like a bronco...when i downshifted there was no problem...under hard acceleration sum hesitations but mostly in the low rpm range...i took it to my mechanic...bad fuel pressure he said...$130 new fuel pressure regulator...then $300 for new fuel pump... he said the problem was fixed...NO WAY...we had words...went simple..i changed the plugs and the problem is solved...after 9k miles i can't imagine a plug being fouled..but when i pulled the very back drivers side plug out..it was wet with gas and barely damaged...this may solve ur problems before anything drastic or expensive...
gyp....I suspect you're gonna continue to have problems until you resolve why the plug was all wet. You replaced the symptom but not the cause (IMO).
Perhaps a leaking fuel injector. Do you smell gas when you open the hood?
There should be none.
Yeah it could be the plugs but I have this problem as we speak and I ve done that and my old plugs werent too bad. I noticed some more power but it still is hesitating when I go to accelerate and pinging as well. Maybe the plug change does it for you but it didnt for me. Look into the sensors specifically the EGR.
I have a 92 sport with a 5 speed and 385,000 miles on it. Before my son over rev ed it and blew out a head gasket, I had the same problem with the clattering under light acceleration. I read for hours on this and other forums trying to figure it out. As it turned out for me, a can of Sea Foam helped the most. The directions should be followed and wear rubber gloves because it will leak all over you. I had carbon deposits that gave me hot spots and increased the compression causing detonation. The Seafoam (I offer both spellings) cleaned it pretty well. I also added a whole can to the gas prior to a long trip to further the process. If you are really savvy you can do the same thing using warm water into a vacuum port but....
There are many good posts concerning this subject. Do a search and read for a couple of hours. It will save you hundreds of $$$ even if you go to a dealer.
Well I just poured some Carb cleaner in my gas tank and drove around for about 20 mins and already noticed my engine power and claterring have improved. I hope this solves my problem for my 02 Explorer XLT;}?
Hey Joe whats up? thanks for the reply and I have recently changed the plugs but you mentioned vacum hose. you know where abouts that is and could I (non- mechanical) fix that myself? I have noticed the clattering has almost disappeared and power has improved but I could still use some more fine tuning tips.
A good quick way to test for vac leaks is to get a can of cheep carburetor cleaner (WD40 works also) and, with the motor running, spray it around the exposed ends of the bundles of wires and small hoses. (there are small vac lines that are routed in the wire bundles on some cars) If there is a vac leak, you will hear the motor speed up a little around where the leaks are.
