Question Usage vs V10

Recently I told my wife my next truck will be a gasser. She answered "why not a diesel?". With the coming ULSD and possible additives, the cost of diesel vs gas and other things and the history of the 6.0. With that she said "thats nice". Well I looked at the my average mileage a year and it came in at 14,000 to 17,000 miles. I also tow a 4,000lb. boat about 10x a year to and from the river and lakes. Thats average. No need to get into the pros and cons of each engine. I think everyone would appreciate that. Maybe fred or capt or other gurus could pipe in. The F150 is a possibility but I need a longbed for my job and a CC for my equipment. Thanks for answering. Bluefire

I think he came to this totally impartial forum to get a little encouragement that the v10 is the right choice.

I would say if you could find a V-10 in a pckage you like then buy it. I lucked into mine, and now I don't understand why they even put the 5.8 in a super duty. I think a lot of people are afraid of the V-10 b/c of mileage, I haven't seen anyone with a 5.8 super duty post more than 16-17 mpg's. I see several used V-10's sitting in car lots since gas went above $3. Diesels are great for farm tractors and semi trucks.

Unfortunately it looks like your location of California has you hosed on a new Ford SuperDuty with the best motor... sorry.... you are stuck with a used truck or a new 5.4L or a PSD.... The 5.4L will do OK but you should consider the lighter truck configuration of super-cab and short bed SRW and the 4.10:1 gear set

I had my favorite cost benefit analysis all set for a good long sales pitch for the mighty V10 until I saw you signature

Didn't the 94's have a 5.8/auto/3.55..... Just because the times change doesn't mean we have too!

Yes I did come to this forum for an impartial opinion on which powerplant will be best for my usage. Iapologize for not being clearer in my post. Being in southern california puts me in a pickle since we are the test state for everything enviromental and not user friendly. I think I may have read Freds V10 pitch somewhere which means I need to do a search. I did not want to look at the F150 or shudder the thought a Chevy1500 CC. I guess I'll have to figure that out for my self. Thanks for the replys. Bluefire

bluefire...

If you know for a fact that the 4K boat is going to be your hardest load on a F250 for the life of the truck then there is really nothing wrong with the newer higher HP 5.4L V8 in the SuperDuty

I would still opt for the supercab configuration and only get the long bed if it was a show stopper... BTW the SB is always 29 gallon fuel tank and the LB is the 38 gallon design

California is one of the harder locals to just buy the truck in Wyoming (or any other non border state) and import back to California... all kinds of hoops to jump through unless you are military and have orders assigning you to the state.. then you are golden

If you have the ability to run the labirinth... 2007 MY SuperDuty may well be the final opportunity to get a extraordinary power-train package...the 3v V10, TorqShift 5R110 and 4.10 or 4.30 gears is probably the best Tow machine Ford ever produced... I predict 5 to 10 years from now they will have higher then average resale value...we are fixing to get all kinds of federal EPA and Fuel efficiency help... I have seen this cycle before... the folks with a need for exceptional performance out of a vehicle are gonna get hosed AGAIN!

Hey "we r crazy"

Yep

The 5.4L is a tad low on the bottom end torque for the acceleration "feel" part of what you experienced on the test drive. This is also exasperated by the slow "break in" process.. the full 300+ ponies don't make their presence known for a few thousand miles....

Remember the new v8 is 300HP and the 99 V10 was 275 with the 2000-2004 V10 at 310HP... the real difference is the 1700-2300 rpm range torque figures.. V10 having 80-85% of peak torque at the bottom or the rpm range makes a HUGE difference in drivability

I bet Ford looses a LOT of sales off new "on the lot" test drives

The 5.4L sees a lot of heavy duty use around here because most construction crews do not need the PSD and they are afraid the V10 is a gas hog "performance" racing motor

80% of the time they are real pleased with the performance of the V8 even in a crew cab long bed loaded to the rails with compressors, welders and tools

I doubt a 4K boat would be too much load for a V8 version, but simply have the experience based idea that most folks would be much happier if they went with the V10 for a measly $510 dollars more

same as the others it's your call. if you can buy outside of CA. and get CA. reg. you would be happy with the v10. that bad part of living in CA. and 9 other carb rules states you won't be able to order a v10 or even a 5.4 with stickshift for a 07.
fred helped me go with the v10 and i truely have to say i could not be happier with a gas motor then with this one. and so far it's pulled every thing i could hitch up to and drop in the bed. like a full wet marine detroit deisel 8v71 tia on the skid from rebuilding

I don't like the idea of having a super duty and a 5.4 under the hood. It should be in a 150 and there alone. I think I would like to experience the BSEG every now and then. Be it the V10 or the 6.0. My oldest daughter is kinda leaning towards a super duty for us but her wallet isn't funding it. Still pondering?????
