Post 67 4 Way Flashers

bightrucker
Years ago I owned a 67 F 100 Custom. This truck had the 4 way flasher switch mounted in the glove box. I thought it was a modification by one of the previous owners. Several people told me it couldn't have been original. I never was sure and could not find a good source to varify either way. It was just recently I saw another 67 with the switch in the glove box. Did they all come equipped this way? Or was this a dealer installed option? Dealer kit? I felt it was kinda strange to put the switch out of the drivers reach. Was 68 this way also? Any previous years 65-66?
Thanks Harold

pre-67 trucks that were equipped with a 4-way had the switch on the dash. 67...in the glove box until I think '70 which went back on the dash. Go figure.

69s had them mounted under the dash. Four-way emergency flashers were optional equipment, and trucks so equipped had toggle switches for them mounted in a black metal bracket that screwed to the underside of the dash to the right of the column.

I agree that they were still in the glove box through 69 and definately not optional after 66, either.

I've never seen one mounted under the dash. The only variation, it appears, on 67-69 was what side of the glove box it was mounted on.

My '68 F-100 has a toggle switch mounted on the lower part of the dash to the right of the steering column. It's marked emergency or flasher, I forget which. Has the same style of bezel as the headlight switch, so I think it's original. Don't see any hole in the glove box where a switch would have been.

[FONT COLOR="#0000ff" SIZE="3" FACE="Veranda"]When it comes to Ford, I never say never, but just the same, I'd like to see a picture, or at the very least, maybe you can get the part identifier off of the bezel and switch.

My 68 F-100 is located in the glove box...for what it is worth the 1968 shop manual volume 3 says:
"On F-100 through F350 trucks...the emergency warning switch is mounted in the glove compartment with the emergency warning flasher unit mounted on the front of the steering column support bracket except on F-250 and F-350 cowl chassis units"

Interesting. I stand corrected on the "optional" part. I checked my '69 Ford Pickups dealer brochure (the one with the red cover showing a red styleside longbed Ranger), and it does indeed say that 4-way flashers are standard equipment. On two interior pictures, however, you can clearly see the emergency flasher toggle switch mounted to the underside of the dash -- right where mine is. I'm no computer expert, so I asked my wife to scan those pictures in last night. She did, but then decided it was time to download and install Internet Explorer 6 from MicroSoft, which promptly crashed our computer. As soon as I can, I'll try to get the pictures online.

I'm wondering if the different location has something to do with whether or not the truck was equipped with A/C. My truck is a factory A/C truck, and both of the pictures in which the underdash toggle switch is visible in the brochure also show a factory air unit. We all know that factory A/C in these trucks resulted in different glove boxes (A/C trucks have very shallow glove boxes with an auxiliary box located in the A/C unit itself).

Also, when I first bought the truck, neither the turn signals nor the hazards were functional. I replaced the turn signal switch with a NOS stock unit, which fixed them. The hazard switch was disconnected and missing its internals, and I couldn't find a NOS one. My father in law, who restores old 'stangs, alerted me to the fact that there was a reproduction emergency flasher toggle switch that looked identical to mine in one of his Mustang catalogs. I ordered it, and it was indeed identical except for the position of the mounting holes on the black metal mounting bracket. It had a "C7" part number, as I recall. I just moved the toggle switch to my existing mounting bracket, and connected everything up. My emergency flashers now work fine.

I'll check for the part number on that switch when I get home. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that at least some '69 Ford pickups came from the factory with the emergency flasher switch mounted to the underside of the dash and to the right of the column.

Good sleuthing and nice follow-up. This is turning out to be very interesting. Perhaps the answer might turn out to be that the placement changed during a "mid-year transition". I look forward to more facts.

I looked in my 1968 F-100 and the 4way is in the right side of the glove box. Also, I have a toggle switch on the lower right hand side of the steering column. Always wondered what it was for. Now I know. Thanks...

This is interesting, I knew karlsd wasn’t loosing his mind when he first posted. Was waiting for more posters to report the same news. Love it when someone says “no way” while the other party has it right in front of them. Have eaten many a piece of humble pie on things like this. Fords, gotta love ‘em! I don’t think this was one of those mid-year transitions. The dealer brochures come out early before the model years. If it was pictured in the brochure (haven’t looked at mine but take Karlsd word for it) then it probably was real. They don’t list any 302’s in the brochure because it was introduced in June of ’69. BTW my ’68 non/ac has it in the right-side of the glove box. I love a mystery!

Karlsd, thanks for the tip on the ‘Stang toggle, I thought they looked the same.

Barry

I always wondered about the 302 V8, too. I sometimes see guys who claim to have original 302s in their 69s, but Ford's literature says the only V8s available were the 360 and 390. Now I know why.

In looking at the brochure last night, I also noticed the nifty "behind the seat storage box" that was only available with the "25 gallon frame mounted fuel tank." Has anyone ever actually seen one of these? I've seen 67-69 trucks with auxiliary tanks to go along with the in-cab tank, but none that had a frame tank and no in-cab tank, and I've never seen one of the behind-the-seat storage boxes.

The brochure also shows bucket seats as being an option, and I don't think I've ever actually seen those.
