Fan clutch

I'm going to be buying a fan clutch here in the next few days because mine has locked up (apparantly that is what had been squeaking for the last month or two). Is it worth it to spend a little extra for a Motorcraft fan clutch, or have you guys had good experiences with aftermarket units?

I'd go for the ford part, myself. If the clutch isn't calibrated properly, either it won't cool enough, or it will cool too much and it will cost extra money in fuel.

I have never had any problem with after market fan clutches...

I have 3 fords and replaced it on 2 of them.

I like to go to Green light because I get a lifetime warentee...

Aftermarket is not quite as good as Motorcraft, but a fan clutch is easy to replace and you can get one with a lifetime warranty from most parts houses.

I rarely skimp when it comes to auto parts. If the part you have now lasted as long as it did, why consider switching to a cheaper brand?

With the better quality stuff like Motorcraft, you get the best fit, the part lasts a long time, and you go through less hassle.

My thoughts exactly...spend a little more now, hopefully won't have to spend it again for another 160000 miles

Thanks!

Had another thought....now would be a good time to go the electric fan route if I can justify doing that instead of buying a new clutch. What are your thoughts?

you can get a nice electric fan from oreillys for about 40 or 50 bucks. i put two on my radiator and it freed up a little power and cooled a little better, then you get to take the fan shroud off and see that beautiful engine clearly, and have better access when you might need to work on stuff. you can hook them up to the ignition to start automatically or have a temp sensor in the radiator.

i went the easy route and wired a nifty chrome switch in my cab with a little red LED light. i pretended i was in a rocket ship and activitating my secondary cooling systems. but thats just me.

Well, I ended up going with a NAPA unit for about 65 bucks. The local Ford dealer quoted me $160 and change and he would have to order it. I could have gotten a Motorcraft from Rock auto for about 100 after shipping and everything, but I really needed it today for the trip up to the lake tonight, so the NAPA part won out for availability and price. All is good so far -- keeps it right at 185 sitting at a stoplight. That beats the 210 it had been creeping up to at lights with no fan at all. We'll see how gas mileage goes...

I do not see how this could be true.
You are just trading the HP from fan to alternator.
I would think you would loose a little in the transfer.

Aftermarket parts sometimes (a lot of the time) come from the same supplier as the dealer parts. No quality difference, you just get raped from the dealer. Take vaseline if you have to go to the dealer. jd
