The D44HD in the 69-75 F250 seem to be the only type of D44 that uses the larger-than-normal 5-86x joints.
So, I can get one of these nearly free. I have disc brake stuff (Chevy) I am sure I can adapt. I'm not worried about the lesser steering angle. I do like the idea of *not* having balljoints. I'm also thinking it may be possible to run the knuckles 'open' after I fit the trunions and u-joints with zerks - perhaps carve some of the ball/socket joint away for access to grease the ujoint.
What am I missing here? Does this sound feasible or am I off my rocker?
The old closed knuckle axles are pretty stout but I would NOT recommend carving the knuckles open. The trunion bearings are designed to be constantly bathed in gear oil, not grease. Also that casting of the knuckle adds strength and support to the bearing.
You might have some success at adapting the chev brakes, but I haven't seen it done..
