IT STARTED TODAY!!! Finally, i got the dist. on the right cog and she took right off. I cant beleive this motor. This thing would outrun my 87 with the built 460 any day. I do think im leaking vacuum somewhere though, but it still runs good at higher rpm. when i put a guage on it ot gos nuts from 10-15 inches and i can tell at low rpm. but shell spin all fours through the first 2 gears without hesitation. Today was the lucky day
'78 400
holley 4180 600cfm (from 351W)
Edelbrock performer intake
Comp Cams XE256H-10 (256/268 .487/.493)
Comp Cams high energy hydraulic lifters
Stock valve springs (probably not a good idea)
Comp Cams magnum double roller timing set (set straight up)
Flat top Pistons from TMI (not sure the what the exact piston is called, it between 9:1 and 10:1 on this motor i beleive)
Standard bore, all bearings standard
Couldnt be happier, one more note: this motor was not built by any means to get good gas mileage, so dont ask what it gets.
you should really find out why the vacuum gauge is going nuts, could be a valve not closing? i'd say an X valve if you have no popping out the carb. or could be an intake gasket leak, that cylinder will be running lean and could hole a piston. could be as simple as a small vacuum leak, believe it or not i recently found an open plug hole where i forgot to put in a plug in my intake. the Predator carb is calibrated so rich that it ran well enough that i didn't know. when i put a Holley on it was obvious, it wouldn't even start much less run.
the pistons are most likely badger which should be 9;1 with stock, open chamber heads.
You should get better mileage than the stock motor and some have reported around 15mpg in 1/2ton 4x4 with large tires. It's an RV/ mileage build- with a ton of power cause it's a stroked cleveland-cool huh?
my build will be similar except scorpion roller rockers and I got a retro hyd roller cam - custom grind to approximate the XE256 but with .520 lift. ramps a bit quicker I think. Cant wait to get to building it (my 1st build)...frustrated with trying to finish other projects first.
The site torque gave you is neat and could help figure out vacuum. Thats gotta be taken care of. Not sure about springs except that stock ones will work- they age though as all metal under pressure so it probably depends on whther they were ever changed out before etc- if not I'd be getting on that soon too as it'd be a horrible shame to lose a spring and toast the motor and staying off the pedal isn't likely.....
it's awesome I bet to feel the mojo of your own build!!!

I really hope its not my valves, this motor was built for my mud racer and the first race is the end of the month, Ill do a compression check tomorow, it seems to me it runs to good to have a problem as serious as a bent valve. maybe ill get lucky and the intake will be leaking somewhere. thanks for the help guys.
