I am trying to get a very quiet exhaust. I like a good rumble from a truck, but not for this application ...
I am wondering how two mufflers in-line (meaning the exhaust gases flow through one muffler and then through a second muffler before tail-pipe) effect velocity and dB. I am guessing that if you use the same muffler the flow isn't going to be any more resricted with two than with one, right? And would you guys suspect a great reduction in noise with the two mufflers vs. one, or would the difference be minimal? Thanks.
I'd use two different mufflers. Some tend to let certain wavelengths of sound loose, so if you get two different ones, it will probably kill almost all of the sound.
To simply answer your question, it will be a little more restricted, but that all depends upon what kind of mufflers you buy. The truck will be much quieter.
I'm running a 400 in an f-350 super-camper crew. I am just about to replace the old manifolds with a set of headers. I will be putting on true dual exhaust. I know I don't have to sacrifice exhaust velocity to reduce noise (think of a high-powered rifle silencer), I just don't know the best way to do it. Thanks for the help!
one thing that will help noise is to run each bank into one pipe(single exhaust) the tones and frequencies blend together and mellow things our....run two 2 21/4 pipes into a single 3" pipe
those headers are going to increase the noise a good bit over manifolds as well.
i would go to an exhaust shop and ask to dig through their scrap pile...usually u can find brand new stainless steel oem takeoff mufflers and get them for free...along with pipes etc. see if you can find one around 3" and you should be good to go
when i want my truck quiet i have a 7.3 diesel muffler of an 03 f-250 i throw on mine(band clamps) and it tones everything down very well, when i want sound and flow i band clamp my 3.5" moros spiral flow back on
Resonators will kill the harsh tones and provide limited sound control, and the mufflers will keep things quiet. Make sure both are a straight through design, and you should be good to go.
I would stick with dual Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. 2.5 in/out offset, 20" case. sumitracing Multiple mufflers is crazy. You want the offset to help flow. See pic: muffler
