Just did my first real tow with the 06 and let me tell you, I LOVE THIS TRUCK!
The torqueshift, tow command and 4.10's along with the 3V motor is a combination that is
simply hard to beat. I pulled hills in overdrive that my previous 99 would have dropped out of
OD a long time before. In approximately 550 miles from NJ to Cape Cod and back,
I can only remember 4 times it dropped lower than 3rd. It spent most of its time in OD
and occasionally dropped into 4th, the downshifts were so smooth that you
wouldn't notice other than the engine getting a bit louder.
The integrated brake controller was so smooth you almost didn't know the trailer was back there.
I used to get some jerking with the Prodigy no matter how much I adjusted it. I set the integrated
controller on 3.5, never touched it after that with about a 6500 pound enclosed trailer and car.
Averaged 8 mpg for the entire trip, I used to get 6.5 to 7 out of the 99 V10 F250.
We ran 60-75 the entire time, it pulled hills like they weren't even there.
You're absolutely right. The 3V V10 is the best kept secret out there. In combination with the tow command and the torque-shift transmission it' a awesome tow vehicle.
Speaking of gas mileage...talked to a neighbor yesterday that bought the 06 PSD DRW Super Duty. He towed TT's for FEMA with it, many of them. He said on his best day he got 14 MPG, but on the average around 13.2. He was not complaining, just shooting straight since he knows I have the older model V10.
Wrench I'm working a deal on a new fiver in Edmonton. If the deal goes trough next week I'll be joining you in the heavy haul crowd. Looking at a Wildcat 29RLBS, weighs about 8K empty and 11,500 Gross. Has dr/lr slide as well as the br slide. I have the 4.10's in my truck but should be OK as I have the smaller 17" wheels and tires. I doubt it will pull in OD like my present setup which is a 27' TT. We'll see.. Here's a pic of what it looks like. I'll start a new tread with some pics and a towing report if all goes through.
Hi Doug, I hope you don't mind me chiming in here. You an I have about the same size trailer. Mines a 29rkle Cardinal and we are very close to the same truck. Mine pulls at freeway speeds in OD all day long. The only time it drops out of OD is when I give it additional throttle to pass someone or maintaining speed up a hill.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprise how well the V10 pulls a trailer that size.
I guess I got very lucky and got a very strong V10 because I have 18" wheels and 4.10s and I am always in OD on the flat and mild grades and my combined weight is 20800 pounds and the Montanas are tall units at 13 feet. My unit is over 10000 pounds empty and we were 12300 pounds all loaded up.
My model is the 2955RL but it is 33 feet long. When that model came out 5 years ago they were only 30 feet but they keep making them bigger.
I like Forest River units and we almost bought a Cardinal except we wanted a washer/dryer unit in a 30 foot RL and only Montana had that. The Wildcat's are also a fine unit. My brother has a 26 foot Wildwood that he bought new 5 years ago and it has been excellent. Stoner, good luck with the new Fiver.
