No matter how I drive, whether its a 70mph road trip, real conservative on the back roads or hot footin' it around town my 94 300ci with the mazda 5 spd gets 18 mpg** although on the winter gas ill get around 17.5 and now with a K&N flter i hit around 18.5, BUTT TALK ABOUT CONSISTANCY!
I don't own one now, I am shopping, but my very unscientific polling of those around me who have or used to have them shows if you have 3.08 gears and the 5-speed, then you can get 18-21. If you have lower gears (i.e. 3.55 or 4.10) and/or an automatic, it goes down pretty quickly.
My '91 XLT 4.9 has the E4od, 3.55 in back, 91k and the dual tank set up. Because of the gas prices, I'm pretty gentle on the gas ... Have gotten a best 15.5 city/19.5 on interstate 30 w/cruise @ 62 mph.
Not a pick-up, but I had a big '91 E-250 van, with the 4.9 and automatic. It got right at 15 in our heavy city traffic. That somewhat amazed me, considering my POS S-10 with a tired 2.9 only gets 16.
I've got a 94 4x4 with 5spd and 3.55 gears and I get 15 highway and 12-13 in town. Of course it gets worse over 75 mph. Oh, I also have 200,000 miles on it.
