Ok here goes, I have a 67 F250 with a brand new 390 cid when I hook up the vacum line to the dis vacum adavance it wont idle as it goes to full adavance i need some kind of vacum reducer and don' know what or where to find one. ANY HELP?????? please
You may not have too much vacuum. Could be that a spring was left unhooked on the advance in the distributor or is broken or weak or maybe even left out. Take a close look in there. It sounds like the advance mechanism is not doing it's job when at idle. The vacuum advance should need the vacuum produced at higher speeds to activate not the vacuum you get at idle.
It is a new (reman) dist. but i will check just to be sure. I've been lead to belive that there should be a delay valve in line before the dist.
Thank you
ill check and let you know
Just a thought but are you using direct manifold vaccuum? It should be hooked, IMHO, to the ported vaccuum port. That way it only gets vaccuum when you open the throttle.
One of those hand operated vacuum pumps is good for checking the vacuum advance. I got a re-built distributo one time that had way too much advance, forgot exactly what was causing it. It may have been the diaphram.
I am using direct manifold vaccuum as there is only one port out the passanger side of the spacer block it tees off to the auto trans and to the dist. the only other outlet is 1/2" dia and goes to the PCV.
what is IMHO...?
Manifold vacuum to the advance is not right, you need ported vacuum that comes on during part throttle. Your carb. should have ported vacuum, what carb. are you running?
Sounds like you found the problem
BBB is right the ported is on the passenger side towars the rear, if I remember correctly. It is the propr vaccuum source to use otherwise you will get advance at idle.
Oh yeah IMHO=In my Honest Opinion
Well I hope I have found the problem but I'm not so sure right now, I'm 100 miles away from the truck so I can't look at it, but I'll know tonight for sure, and will let you guys know. MAN !!!you all have been great and I thank you for the help.
ok the saga countinues. I am using port vacuum on the base of the carb passenger side there is only one connection so it tees off to the trans and then to the dist. still I have way too much adavance at idle. I was told by my local ford parts man (also the last onwer of the truck) that there should be a vacuum reduction valve in line to the dist. (no longer adavable from ford). soooooooooo, now what ????
Couple of things don’t sound right. First, they didn’t use delay or reduction valves back in ’67. Second, the carb. fitting at the base that tees off to the trans. is not ported vacuum, it’s full vacuum and that’s what the transmission takes. There should be a ported fitting on the passenger side but located higher than the base, more like midway. I’m gonna have to find some Autolite pics.
I looked REAL hard for about an hour last night its the only port I can find its low on the carb base and in front of the butterfly near the hold down stud. I dont know about what was stock in 67 I only need for it to work right, so if a reduction valve would do it then I don't mind useing one. If I knew witch one to use.
