If you lift the wiper arm off of the glass, the retaining clip can be slid to the unlocked position. The arm is tough to get off if it's corroded. I have a Lisle wiper arm removal tool that helps (http://www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=1129). Some have had had to resort to cutting the arm hub with a Dremel tool or drilling a hole in the top and using a 2-jaw puller. The motor shaft has a serrated end that is larger than the motor shaft, so don't try pulling on that.
oooh, so the horseshoe clip doesnt get completely removed...makes sense I guess since the NAPA guy couldnt find it in his computer. I think I have apuller int he bottom of my tool box...atleast I hope so.
My wife has a 01' escape and the rear wiper also quit working, just stoped half way up and died. I had to cut the wiper arm off with the dremel so now its junk. Now i am so scared to mess with it anymore i dont want to break the rear glass, I cant get the nut off from the out side to get the motor out. Is there any tricks?
Used a bit of heat and a plastic mallet with a flattip screw driver to pry...and it popped right off....ok... had to heat the crap out of it and hack the wiper arm mount for 10 mins or so. All in all, a pretty easy fix. NAPA remanned motor for $70 bucks after a 'friends & family' discount!
00GT, I went out and pulled off the rear wiper arm and the plastic shield covering the motor attachment nut. The nut was rusty and there was some white powder buildup from electrolysis between the dissimilar metals. I cleaned that up with Liquid Wrench and sprayed a little white lithium grease on it. I also sprayed a little Liquid Wrench down the shaft before sliding the seal back. The nut holding the motor shaft to the glass is a 22 mm, but a 7/8" deep socket should work if you don't have a 22 mm.
I used a 7/8" socket on an impact wrench to loosen the nut...hand tools din't cut it. I anti-siezed the nut and wiper-arm post before re-assembling. The white-powder is probably due to road salt (if used where you live) or acidity in the rain/water.
Wiper arms are dealer items only, as well as the plastic cap over the nut I think. NAPA couldn't get them for me. I melted the cap a bit with the torch...oopsie...
