I own a 2000 ford explorer XLT with approx 67,000 miles on it.
I have begun to hear a grinding sound when I make right-hand turns, I tend to hear it more when making a right-hand turn on an incline.
What would be the cause of this noise, and is it a dangerous condition?
Sounds like a wheel bearing. But don't the 00' have the hub bearing assy. that needs to replaced as a unit like my 02'?I just replaced my left front because of noise and vibration.Had my right front repalced two years ago.
I replaced my left front bearing/hub assy a few weeks ago myself. Got hub from dealer for $170.00.Had dealer replace right front 2 years ago and they charged 1.4 hrs labor to replace plus part and $65.00 to find problem. If you want to replace it yourself there is a link on left side of forum page for directford parts. They are a dealer in las vegas and sell parts well below retail.I asked them how much for a hub assy just for kicks and he said around $150.00 shipped I believe. They just sent me a Motorcraft serpentine belt $26.00 shipped. My dealer wanted $32.00 ,plus my gas to get there and back would of been closer to $38.00.Just thought I'd mention them.
How hard was it to change the bearing assembly? I also have an '02 Moutaineer that is making that noise. If I am correct, it should be three bolts plus the 1.25" axel nut. I had changed them on my '98 Explorer, and forgot how easy it was.
