Has anyone tried or heard about after market coil packs....I can get them from ford for about 70 bucks ea.....I just changed all my boots and springs (8 bucks ea. after market)and noticed at least half my coil packs are corroded....also what are your views on using dielectric grease at the coil pack and plug upon reassembly.
Ford requires that dielectric grease be used at the plug/boot area.
Coils at the Ford's around me are much more than $70. I've bought them at Advance Auto for about $50, made by GP Sorenson. I've had no problems with them. I can tell by the manufacturing marks that the outer body of the coil was made by the same people as the Motorcraft coils ..... I can't tell if the electronics are the same.
You know what? Chances are they ARE the same coil pack, just sold wholesale at a different level in the supply chain.
I would not have a problem with aftermarket parts AT ALL. I have never had an aftermarket part of a good brand name (Standard, etc) fail quicker than the stock parts.
When My 2000 F350 V10 was just over 4 years old, it developed a problem of missing everytime it rained hard. Let it dry out and it was OK again. I pulled the boots and put dielectric grease around the connectors. No problems since and it has been over a year.
I have a set of these on the way for my V10. I'm curious to see how reliable they'll be. Normally the kit for the V10 sells for $700 but they gave them too me for $600. That's at least $200 cheaper than OEM.
