My son has a '99 Expy with a 5.4 and is experiencing some weird running issues. We have already had the Idle Control Valve replaced and flushed the transmission trying to remedy the missing during acceleration. ( one shop thought it was transmission related...took it to trnasmission shop and they said no-way) It has also just shutdown completely a few times. All of this and no codes. I have searched this site extensively before posting and have cleaned the MAF, checked EGR vacuum lines, PCV valve, etc...Last idea involves the COP's and plugs....If this is not it, then we are back to square one...scared to take to dealer because of diagnostic cost involving "no-codes" but may have no choice...
any other ideas would be appreciated...
thanks in advance..

Actually, the dealer is most likely to have the equipment to properly diagnose the probable misfire.
They will likely suggest a coil stress test, which will test the coils under operating load instead of just a static resistance test.
CXodes will only be set if the miodsfires have reached a threashold that the computer is programmed to recognize as a significant problem. If you have a scanner that will read Mode 6 data, you can look at the misfire counts that are accumulating but have not reached the CEL/code threshold.
For the at-home wrench turner, new plugs (Motorcraft) and playing round-robin with a new coil is the the most common cjoice. Very time consuming...
Of course, if you can induce the misfire, hammer on that driving condition on two consecutive drive cycles and see if you can force the CEL to appear.
Have you considered a basic tune-up? Often plug wires and related components which break down overtime will begin to show the symptoms as described. As they continue to break down this problem will be produced during moderate acelleration and later during idle. Therefore, I would suggest a full scale tune up including the coil packs to rectify this situation.
I had a similar problem with my 03 EB, 4.6l. During acceleration, I would get a definite misfire, but check engine light. When it first happened, it felt as though the transmission jumped. Well after much research (mostly on this site) and a quick run by a shop (free diagnostics) and no code, I tried fuel injector cleaner and she now purrs like a kitten. Hasn't missed since. Almost 3 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed.....
I also had similar situation that caused a little rough idling then would smooth out after i drove around for a bit. About 2 weeks of this the SES light went off. Took it to a great shop in Brooklyn Ny.( home of the Expedittions ..lol). No codes..I had 65000 miles on a 99 exd, a complete tune - up with all motorcraft, they cleaned my injector vales and fuel injectors,....etcc
Hey everyone? Has anybody used the 4 sprong plugs on the 5.4 engines? I live in Miaim where it is extremelly hot and very expensive fuel any help I'd appreciate

no way, don't do it. Use only Motorcraft or Autolite Double Platinum plugs.
