2002 4x4 Wheel Stud Replacement

I need to replace at least one of my rear wheel lugs on my 4x4 Supercrew. Do I need to remove the rear axle shaft, or at least detach it from the brake adaptor?

I need to pick up a Haynes or Chilton manul anayways, so that should probably answer this, but who knows when I'll actuall pick one up.

Any guidelines/hints for doing this? I might change all 5 studs for piece of mind. The shop didn't tighten up the wheel and my wife noticed a bad noise that was new. All the nuts were loose and one stud was broken off. If I can get one changed, I might as well get all 5 changed.

Thanks!

Scott

Welcome to FTE!

Did you figure it out yet? If I were you, I would try to get the shop that screwed up to fix this or pay for the damage, but that might just be a waste of time. It shouldn't be too hard, you can go be autozone and borrow the tool to press out the old stud. You would need to remove the brake caliper and rotor first and then press them out. Then use some flat washers and the lug nut to press the new stud back on. There's some directions I got off the autozone website:

Raise and support the vehicle safely.

Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

remove the brake drum.
OR remove the rear disc brake caliper, bracket and rotor.

Using wheel stud removal tool T74P-3044-A1 or equivalent, press the lug stud from its seat in the hub.

WARNING

Never use a hammer to remove the lug stud, as damage to the hub or bearing may result.

To install:

Insert the new lug stud in the hole in the hub. Rotate the stud slowly to assure the serrations are aligned with those made by the old lug nut stud.

Place 4 flat washers over the outside end of the lug nut stud and thread the wheel lug nut with the flat washer side against the washers.

Tighten the wheel nut until the stud head seats against the back side of the hub. Do not use air tools as the serrations may be stripped from the stud.

Remove the wheel lug nut and washers.

install the brake drum.
OR install the rear disc brake rotor, bracket and caliper.

Install the tire and wheel assembly and snug the lug nuts.

Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to specification

Thanks for the info, Triton_2002! I suspect the press tool wouldn't even cost too much to buy, as it looks like a slightly modified C-clamp. If that's the case I'll buy one and save the drive back to return the tool.

Thanks for the info!

Just an FYI for anyone else looking for info on this. The wheel studs cannot be removed without removing the halfshaft. This is probably the state of affairs when the wheel studs changed to 14mm diameter in 2000 model year.

So, if you are going to do this yourself, make sure you have some diff lube on hand and the means of disposing of the old diff fluid, as well as some silicone sealer for the diff cover.

It's all doable, but a bigger job than I was hoping!
