Hey guys my 1993 f-250 with 7.3 IDI has been running good and everything and i installed 4inch exhaust and also a bigger intake that runs into the aircleaner. It now runs better! the one thing i have noticed tho is you got to crank on it for like 10-20 sec before it will start to fire. then once it fires it is liek a hit and miss and finaly it will start up and run. It only does this first time inthe morning. The glow plug wait to start light stays on for about 1sec if that. its about 40degrees outside. Are these trucks just that way or do i got some problems somewhere? Please let me know because i cant seem to figure it out... I also still hear the clicking noice from it when i turn the key onto the on position. I jsut cant seem to figure it out. what could go bad on these systems? Also how do you hook the glow plugs into a push button? Also how long do you hold them on when you do?
thanks,
Jimmy
sounds like a glow plug problem. One bad glow plug will give them a hissy fit and more than one will just add to the situation. Check the glow plugs as described in other posts and use motorcraft - beru plugs for replacement to avoid problems later.
It is either the glow plugs or the relay/controler is going bad. The relay should stay on for 5-10 seconds for you local this time of year. But if there is a bad GP then it messes up the controler time. Look for threads about the controler also. Test you GP's before doing anything. It will give you a good starting place.
I would fit a complete set of new glow plugs. Should solve the problem. There was a thread here some months back about bypassing the controler-a search may turn it up.
