Yes that is the box that replaced the fuel tank.
The pic of the generator is also the same (the generators drew gas right out of the pick-ups fuel tank and had electric start off of the pick-ups battery)
His mirrors are different, they are square and painted white like everthing else. They are a Ford mirror though. I also know that they are stock because he doesn't change stuff like that around. We also have pics of it the day he brought it home and the mirrors are on there.
The emblems are stainless steal stickers that are stuck to the cowl.
I am still looking for the v.i.n.

>would be. It has a canopy on it and has had since new.
A plug huh? Now that's two ways I've heard about the filler hole. Wonder if the smoothed over ones were done by the owners?
Now I feel stupid, what's a canopy?
Thanks for all the cool info!

Is this mirror like the one on your grandfather’s truck?

And when you say canopy, is this like what he has? The Ford Accessories catalog calls it a pickup convertible top.

Thanks again, hope I’m not becoming a drag and boring you all to death.

No, your not being a drag. This is the first time anyone has known what a contractor special is. "Fords don't come with no generator" I am sooooo tired of hearing that. I can't find the vin because it is in my garage and I am painting the inside of my garage and everything is a total mess. The canopy is also known as acamper or topper. It is a home made one he made for his '64 (also bought new but traded in on the '69). They swapped it over at the dealership for him.
The fuel filler hole I believe was put in before the body was painted because I pulled the rubber plug out and the hole was painted and had no bare metal showing (like it was punched when they were forming the body panels)
I love seeing all of the old pics of the contrator specials.
I have noticed that all of the pics are of 1/2 tons, his is a 3/4 ton, I wonder if that could make a differenc on the mirrors?

The brochure says the three "specials" here are F250’s but they look like F100’s to me with those little hubcaps and the deluxe 15" wheelcovers.

IMO,
Except for registration purposes,VIN #'s actually contain very little significant info.
:Truck series code,Engine,Plant, and consecutive build number, is all.
To me the pertinent info is on the rest of the rating plate.
Original colour,Axle,trans,body/trim code,DSO/Special order code.

Speaking of familiar photos in those brochures, check this out. That 4x4 is the same one in the '70, '71 and 72 brochures, only the grille changed. Same story for the yellow Six-Man Crew Cab, the red F350 Chassis Cab and the blue F100 with the shell.
The '70 and '71 brochures have the same F250 Camper Special and F350 Camper Special except for the grille again. Pretty good artwork, I guess they got their money's worth!
Barry
another funny is that the camper on the p-up is almost the same as mine.
thanks
