Hello fellow Ford people. I have just purchased a 1975 F150 to add to my collection. The previous owner has butchered the wiring. The motor is a built 460 (with DOVE C heads). The cam is extremely radical, but I have got it to idle somewhat. The problem now is that it shuts off after running for 3 to 5 minutes, then is hard to start again. Sometimes it will not do anything. The alt light is on and goes out when you try to engage the starter then comes back on. The lights do not dim when trying to start. I was thinking that it may be the ignition switch. Any suggestions?

Could be a wiring problem if it has been butchered. You need to check for 12V to the S terminal on the solenoid when you turn the key.
Have you checked the voltage at the battery when it is running? It should be above 13V. It could have a bad ignition module that would make it die when it is running.
Thanks for the reply. The battery voltage seems to be good. I have also noticed that the engine will not try to fire as I am trying to start it but will try as I release the key while attempting to start. Also , I did a compression check and all cylinders came up between 185 and 190 except for number 3. It came up at 240, I tried it three times. Any ideas on that?

I had similar problems with my 460. The first part of my problem was that the starter was getting cooked (typical with a 460 transplant in a 4x4) so I made a heat shield. Second was the starter solenoid to fix the 'starting when you let the key go' thing. Next I replaced the whimpy battery cables with some meaty ones. These things solved 80% of the problem, but it still started hard when hot. Setting the proper timing did the trick and I haven't had a problem since.
I agree with Dennis, its sounds to me like you may have than one problem here.
In addition to those things already mentioned, the problem re; starter not turning over could be the simplest thing like corroded or broken batt connections/cables, .
