at least some people believe its possible...others jus tthrow the idea out the window just by hearing it and say puta 460 in it...i will if i blow up the 6
In the late '60s & early '70s Father did just that for friends of his that were into Dragsters & wanted an engine that would hold together longer than v-8s are capable of.
He managed on a Regular Basis to get out of his hand built 300's, 500hp & 600hp.
So as I've been stating here on FTE all along, 300's are Capable of Big HP out-put, But it's Really all about the Amount of FPT that goes along w/ those HP #'s, Because w/o those Matching FPT #'s where you Need them, all the HP in the world just doesn't matter.

I don't doubt it can be done, I doubt it can be done with off the shelf parts. A turbo or nitrous will help a lot, but you are still talking about some serious hardware. For artificial aspiration you are going to need a lot of exhaust valve to dump the waste and there really isn't that much room in there. You likely need to O-ring the cylinders to contain the pressure. I don't know that I would trust the stock crank to live long in that environment, especially if you are going to offset grind it enough to mean anything. The idea of a 600 hp 300 is full of catch 22's. To do it naturally aspirated it will have to spin to the moon, which is a rough road with a 10" pushrod and 50 cubic inch cylinders. The head will have to flow around 400 cfm on the intake side and you won't get there with a stock head. If you go with boost or laughing gas to reduce the rpm you've got to worry about pounding the bottom end out of it with cylinder pressure or twisting the crank to death. I think you are setting yourself up for big disappointment.
dissapointment happens...but once again if it blows up her comes a freshened 460 LOL...if i feel like it at least
If it does blow isn't that alot of wasted money? I know I sure couldn't afford to spend all that time and money just to have it fail. Maybe thats just me.
A fried of mine had a jet boat. With a proper impeller in his jet pump a 460 stock. Usualy bought a car with a 460 in, it from the trader or a junk yard were ever for 200.00 or so. He had a set of turbos on it. He could ot run most any jet boat some had over 10K in there engines alone. His engines cost less than some of there push rod sets. The 460 turo guy could blow a 200 dollar motor and be back next week with a new one. Get tthe Idea.
Another put a turbo on his 6 cyl Rambler waggon. He turned low 11s in the quarter. We used a radiator cap for a pop off valve. After a few yeas it slowed down a bit. Turned out the radiator cap/pop off valve needed replaced. BAM low 11s agan drove it to work every day.

Ditto. If I had $8k-10k to throw at an engine just to watch it blow up I think I could find a better way to entertain myself with that money.
yah it would be a waste of money...but ya know stuff happens...i like my I6 and i wont mind paying for parts for it(even if it does blow up)460 is last resort
I'd look into a turbo with fuel injection, roller cam, good roller rockers and a stud girdle and if you got the money some good pushrods carbonfiber or somthing in that area.To kinda put things in perspective, my friends have a 63' FALCON w/ a turbo'd 250 latemodel log head with a holley 350,FSP 274 cam and intercooler and they are almost to the 400hp mark with that combo.I would think that a 240/300 with SBC valves and a good port & polish turbo'd and with EFI could be in the 500 hp range. Good luck with your project.
