these trucks come with dual 2.5" off the manifolds, high flow cats and a 3" single tube for the rest of the way back. There is no need to buy a full cat back unless you really want to spend the $$$. There is no flow improvement with the new exhaust pipes. Now the muffler is a whole different story. Get a good pass through design (magnaflow or select dynomaxx) and you will save at least a hundred bucks. An 18" magnaflow is around $85, plus a few bucks labor to have it installed. I would recommend that you have it welded because I have had exhaust clamps come loose regularly and refuse to use them ever again.
I run an aero turbine and like the muffler but their claims about milage improvements are BS in my book. I don't think the muffler is worth the extra $$$ and since I have tried both magnaflow and aero trubine (also flowmaster and B&B and didn't care for them) I would do a mangnaflow and keep the extra money.
I have the privelege of driving a Roush Stage 3 truck because of a work project. I think the Roush duel exhaust sounds awesome. not too loud. a lot like a mustang gt. they actually have two mufflers to pic from, the quieter one which was on this truck and an "offroad" louder one.
Ford truck enthusiest get a discount i think on Roush parts.
rambunctious, nice Formula. It looks like a 272 or 292? How did you like the Roush Stage 3? Was it quick? How long did you drive it? I am looking to install the new intercooled supercharger kit on my 2006 F-150. I drive it everyday and am looking for feedback on mileage and driveability with the supercharger. Thanks.
P.S. Do you know a guy that runs a 41' Apache called Allez-Vite?
hessdk,
thanks for the kudos on the formula. yes its a 272 (29') with twin bigblocks
if you want to see a cool video I made of the boat, plug in your headphones and crank it up ) Rambunctious Video
I have heard of that apache ( through my other hobby tech forum, offshoreonly.com)but don't know him personally.
back to the topic..... I drove the stage 3 for about 200 miles over Easter weekend. and then in detroit to a customer meeitng. I absoultely loved it. Mileage was low (11.7mpg average for my weekend aroudn town trip) but I was on it alot. at the end of my weekend i actually began to drive it normal. I would expect mileage to be somewhat worse thank stock with the parasitic losses spinning a blower...... but it's a truck......
the drivability was awesome. throttle response was instantaneous, shift points were higher and firm. fixes a pet peeve of mine on my stock FX4.(shifts WAY too early into second). The roush truck even stays for quite some time in third at light loads before shifting into overdrive. very nice for if you want to tip in.... ie. it doesn't lag shifting out of overdrive, lockup torque converter, etc.
I would much prefer this drivability over mine. to the point that i think i will order an edge controller for mine.......
the thing is wicked fast....... pulls harder at 80mph then it does at 40 or 50 !!! that is what is so fun about the supercharger...... when a nat aspirated engine is falling on it's face, this super charger is still pushing air. it sits you back hard in the seat at 50mph for a close to 7000lbs truck, and seriously has even more accelleration at 80.
One think I would find out is if the new mapping comes with the supercharger. This is a big part of the drivability. ( i'm sure it does, only makes sence for warranty, etc)
Go for it !!!!

rambunctious, thanks for the reply. The kit does come with the Roush tune. What configuration was the stage 3, example: 4X4, supercab? Under normal driving conditions, was the blower whine noticeable in the cab? I am also looking at adding the "legal" exhaust kit, which is the same as on the Roush produced trucks. You had mentioned in the post that you liked the exhaust on the stage 3. I assume the exhaust is slightly louder than a stock system with no "drone" in the cab. Your feedback is appreciated as I am looking to spend about $6000 for the upgrades.
you don't here the wine at all until under load. and then it is pretty subtle..... but you know it's there. and the guy next to you prolly hears it more than you do in the cab......perfect
the truck had the street legal exhaust and I really liked it. and the truck buddies at work really liked it too. a lot like my 89 mustang gt I had. nice sound. heard everytime at startup, sound good under hard excelleration, noticeable under normal driving, but no drone.
the truck I had was a super crew 2wd. we had roush build this configuration for an interiors project and the 2wd had a more attention grabbing stance ( that's why we did the roush in the first place)
check into the FTE discount if you haven;t already, there should be a code you can enter when ordering parts, not sure of the discount amount though.....
here was one of our interiors modelers response when he hit the throttle on a little shake down run.... speaks for itself.....
hope this helps.
The Roush Legal exhaust sounds and looks great. Not too loud...enough to take notice from others. Looks great on the truck as well. Just installed it on jy 2005 FX4 Supercrew.
Mine exits out the rear with duals, with chrome tips. They look great. I will posts some pictures soon. The whole system cost me around $450 installed at a local Roush Ford Dealership. I am very pleased with it. spent alot of time deciding whether or not to go with the Off Road version, but decided on the Legal version for my wife and kids. I was very concerned it would give too much drone on long trips with the family. Glad I did as it is just what I wanted..very throaty at start and under acceleration.
