...Hello FTE's. My truck is a '97 F250HD 4x4 reg cab/long box PSD 5-spd. Have you ever experienced this situation: At low speed in 2wd (about 3-5 mph) driving in straight line - turn the steering wheel 1/2 turn or a bit more than 1/2 turn in either direction --- I get a growly vibrating roughness noise & lurchy feeling in the cab. It's definetly in the front end & I'm thinkin' steering box/pump problem. Any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.
That almost sounds like what happend in my old 250 if the front hubs were still locked. Do you have automatic or manual locking front hubs? If there manual check to see that the hubs are unlocked, if they are, you may need to pull them apart and re-greese. If there auto, you may need to take them appart and re-greese to get everything moving again. I would wait for some more of the guys here to chime in with there opinion before you go pulling stuff apart, but that's could be a posibility... hope this helps...
...they are manual hubs. I should mention that in coming to the question of steering box, I had the front wheels in the air separatly, in neutral, locked the hubs, turned the steering wheel, then SPUN the tire by hand, nothing of concern to be heard on both sides. Normal.
I've since been out in the truck, and this 'situation' was not as obivious as it was earlier today. (The trip this a.m. was about 30 - 40 miles before the 'situation' surfaced.)

Had a strange vibration in mine, once. Turned out the shaft from the steering column to the gear box was bad. It had so much play in it the front wheels could kinda bounce back and forth causing the vibration. It only seemed to do it at slow speeds. Just a thought and something to check. Goodluck hope it helps.
...here's a wrap on this issue for now. Haven't the time at present to pursue this thing with a 'shop' pro. I'll create another post down the road and hopefully contibute some useful info.
