Brake issues

I put new Raybestos pads and rotors on my 2001 F-250 about 3 weeks ago. And just in the past week when I drive more than 20 miles or so I get a loud low pitch moan from the front breaks when applied. It only does it when the truck has been driven and is hot. No pull or pulsation with the moaning noise. I have pulled the wheels off and rotors and brakes appear to look normal and heat shields are away from the rotors. Does anyone have any suggestions for this off the wall problem.

Assuming the caliper slides are well lubricated and were cleaned prior to install which might account for the pad not retracting quite all the way causing the "moan", I will say that this is not "unexpected" either. 20 years ago Raybestos were quality products, unfortunitely their rotors are made of composite material, casted in China and machined here. Their brake linings are really not much different in terms of consistant quality, ranging from the lining composition to the bonding or riviting process. You might try sanding and re-cleaning the rotors and pads after ensuring the caliper slides are functioning correctly. It is likely a buildup of brake lining dust wedging itself inbetween the pads/rotor contact area. You might try another set of pads.

If that doesn't work I would highly recommend Carbotech Engineering linings (mfg by Wellman industries in most cases) which cost about $120 a set (they have a web site but you should call direct). Wellman is a lining mfg that has been in business since the 1950's, producing the Veva-Touch linings and to this day produces the linings used on all Indy & Formula 1 cars. Carbotech specializes in street or race applications and their street linings are excellent producing about 20% more braking power (increase friction) with about 50% less dust than OEM pads (personal experience over 20 years). I can say that on my 65 mustang which has been in the family since new, with 240,000 miles, it has had 3 sets of brakes, my F150 which I recently sold had 90,000 miles on the pads before I replaced them, my wifes 97 cougar sport (V8), presently has about 50,000 miles in very heavy city traffic and are about 1/3 worn.
