I started my truck this morning. Not too cold. Anyway, as soon as I touched the brakes the truck started to moan. It also moaned when I turned the wheel.
Truck is an '02 with 114K Thanks Ben
Flushing the system has helped with a lot of different noises coming from the pump. I think it would be worth a couple quarts of fluid. I flushed mine with synthetic ATF.
Absolutely. I flushed mine at 100k, 150k, 200k, and 250k and this weekend finally replaced it after having a new pump on the shelf for about five years. I can now "test" the ABS again. Steering is better but not nearly as good as my dad's '02 which tells me I need ball joints again. Also my tread is low and that makes a big impact.
Use synthetic ATF. Mobil 1 works great, but others will too.
The moan you're hearing can also be referred to as squalling. The simple explanation to that is, fluid passing around the vanes of your power steering pump. When it moans, have you checked the PS reservoir for foam? Also, have you done any steering without the engine running? Hopefully it's just old fluid, in which case the flush should help.
I have not turned the wheel with the engine off.
I have not pulled the cap yet, but the level looked ok through the plastic.
I am not a mechanic by any means, but I do like to change the oil and other stuff like that myself. How difficult is it to flush? The write up made it look extremely easy. Also, how many quarts of fluid should I plan on buying?
Thanks for all of the help.

The flush is very very easy. I Just pulled the line off of the brake booster, got 6' of 3/4" clear vinyl tubing and ran it into a bucket. Turning the wheels lock to lock with the brakes applied really move the fluid through! I bought 3 quarts but 2 would've sufficed. I Kept running the syn through until the fluid in the vinyl was a clear bright red.
Having a helper in the cab doing the steering/brake work while I refilled the reservoir made it really easy!
I won't guarantee the noise will go away, in fact in my experience the noise usually indicates the pump is working. Any problems with turning at low to no speed?
Update... I flushed the system with 2.5 quarts of Mobile 1 Syn ATF. Everything sounds normal but the brake seems a little harder. Maybe that is in my head, I have been driving a Jeep for the last couple of days. Total cost for fluid and clear hose $29. Not taking the truck to a mechanic. Priceless. Thank you for all of your help.
