I have a 93 F150 and I'm TRYING to replace the power steering hoses. I guess my first question may seem like a stupid one but I can't find the answer anywhere. Can P/S hoses be hooked up backwards (pressure to return)? Either at the pump or the steering gear box? I've had the truck 3 years and always had what seems like weak P/S but it wasn't until a recent leak that I decided to do anything about it. Inspecting the system I found that the hose with the P/S Pressure Switch is leaking. This hose is hooked up to the inlet port on the steering gear box so I assumed it was the pressure side of the system. The same hose is hooked up to the upper port on the P/S pump which I thought was the return port. I ordered the new switch and pressure hose, but the hose has no hole for the switch and is much longer than the old one, which made me think...Is my system hooked up backwards and could this be the reason for my weak P/S? I know it would be simple to switch the hoses and test the system that way, but I'm trying to avoid any damage that may cause.
The return hose just clamps on to the PS pump reservoir so that connection can't be mixed up. The other fitting on that pump is a big fitting with the little plastic seal so that can't be mixed up either. So that leaves the two on the steering gearbox. I can't remember but I think those are the same. But the premade lines from NAPA that I put on when I had to do this were prebent and it was obvious which fitting they screwed into.
I had a '91 with 200,000 miles on it, the pump was noisy. The fluid was really brown. I changed the oil several times (return line into a drain pan, turn the pulley by hand and keep putting oil in) until it would stay red and it made a huge difference with the noise.
