Broke the driveshaft

My van was rolling forward just a little and I popped it into reverse to park it and it busted the weld on the rear of the driveshaft. Even with 117k miles it had to be a bad weld job. Anybody know what's cheaper? Getting it rewelded, which will require a balancing, or buy a used one? So far the only one I've found was at a junk yard online for $151! I think I can get a guy at work to weld it but then I'll still have to have it balanced.

I had to have the driveshaft for my 67 GTO cut to fit. Found a local guy with a lathe in machine shop. Takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Michael

No, you used it in a way it was not suppose to be. Much better that then your transmission or rear end breaking. If you do that in any vehicle, you are looking at destruction unless it was designed as a torque member.

When I nuked mine on my 1980, I went to a truck shop and had them give me a heavy duty walled one like you find on tractors.

That is pretty expensive for used. You might want to try one of the people that advertise in the back of 4x4 magazines such as Woods.

I found a speed shop that welded it and balanced it for $70.

I was barely moving forward when I put it in reverse. It was less stress on the driveshaft that a full throttle start. Also, the speed shop agreed that it was a bad weld and that the u-joint should break first. They make aluminum driveshafts all the time and they've never had a broken weld. They also said the front weld was crap. They fixed that one up too. I can see the difference. The original welds looked like they had been done by me. The ones on there now are even all around.

Wow! That is an excellent price, you might consider giving what other services they offer a second look.

I found a place in South Bend called Precision that would have welded it and balanced it for $65 but I didn't find out until after it was done.
