I have a 1960 F100 4x4 that I bought as a project. It was missing the short driveshaft between the T98 and the Spicer 24. I have the parts CD and (if I'm reading it correctly) it says it was 15 29/32" long and 2" diameter.
I'm assuming it would be next to impossible to buy one but please chime in if you know where I can.
I found a local place that will make or modify one for me. It's about $300 from scratch, $200 to modify or $100 to balance.
A buddy has given me a few parts off his 64 2wd parts truck and I believe I could get his driveshaft inexpensively. I'm an amateur welder and, if it's the right diameter, I'm tempted to grab his, cut it down and weld it up.
Would somebody with a 4x4 please confirm that the dimensions are correct? My shop says to measure from bottom of ujoint to bottom of ujoint.
Is there anything I need to know that makes this drive shaft special? The yokes?
I'm just going to make a guess here but I'd bet a shaft all the way to the last divorced T-case (early77) would bolt in. $300 seems a little pricey to build one. You may get by welding your own up. I've done several myself over the years with pretty good luck and not balanced. I've had my 29 well over 100 mph with a home made one and no vibration.
I'll go slide under my 59 and measure that one later and post the dimensions.
I thought $300 seemed like a lot for a 16"x2" shaft, too.
I re-read the parts CD I have and it turns out the 16" shaft is for a 3 speed F100 4x4. Mine is a 4 speed. I can't find a 1960 4x4 4 speed shaft in the book except for a 1959 f250 and that shaft is 13 1/16" x 2". NumberDummy?
Thanks for checking dimensions Billy. Is yours a 3 speed or 4 speed? F100 or F250?
Mine is a 4 speed F-250 but I imagine the F-100 would be the same. Mine measures 15 1/2" center of cap to center of cap as it sits. It also has a 4 bolt flange yoke that bolts to the transmission you will need if you don't have it and assuming it's the same style as mine.
