hey all i searched through the tech articles and some previous posts and couldnt find anything, but can anyone tell me if a NP205 transfercase from a 79 f-150 4x4 work in place of the chain driven 208 in my 82 f-150 without any additional parts like an adapter or different crossmember etc? any help is appreciated, thanks
edit: forgot to mention that both trucks have the C6 auto in them if it makes a difference.

as long as the shift linkage fits, trans/tcase adapter bolt pattern is the same, and tcase crossmember mount if you have one, and the cases are the same lenght. There are married and divorced np205 cases.
In my Bronco I went from a 208 to a 205. It bolted to the adapter but I had to grind a small notch for the shift rail to work. I needed to make a new crossmember and change the driveshafts because the 205 is shorter than the 208. I have an np 435 4 sp. in a Bronco though, so I'm not sure that your situation is the same.
Not sure on that one because my setup us different. You might be able to figure it out by measuring. They might work. Do you have acess to the complete truck for parts?
no not right now i dont. the 82 i have we had to leave behind when we moved and its about 260 miles from here lol. i could prolly find a few in the junkyards around here if they have those style of trucks. figured if the older transfercases would interchange with no problem then i'd be set cuz i hate chain drive cases lol they dont last very long with my driving habits . i'm planning on getting the 82 up here sometime just waiting on the cash flow since gas is high. but i'll see what i can do i guess lol.
The 205 has the side support bracket. If you do not use this the adapter or trans housing will break. Then depending on which year 205 you pick up it will have one of the two different u-joint sizes offered. 79 models got the larger u-joints and 78 got the smaller ones.
think i might have found some useful information about the swaps here is what i've found so far that looked decent in detail lol http://4wheeloffroad.com/howto/3104/index3.html so pretty much the way im seeing it is that all i have to do is change the u-joints cuz i found in the lmc truck catalog the u-joints have different part numbers and that i might have to make some new holes or something in the crossmember and some shifter linkage adjustment hope this helps for others also.
I guessed I should have confirmed that the cases all have the same bolt pattern but I thought that was already understood. Either way you know now.
I have a 205 mounted to a ZF which had a 1356 case. I as well had to notch the adapter flange to make clearence for the 205 shifter rod and the shifter rod had to be shortened by almost an inch. The 205 shiofter bolted to the side of the ZF trans.
I have no clue if your stock shifter will work or not and the article you found is not very helpful. The only thing it clears up is all the cases share the same mounting pattern and spline counts. It clearly states that other mods may be needed and they will.
My application is different than yours. I have a 78 project bronco that's getting a 460 with a ZF 5-speed trans and I have already fitted the 205 case to it. Here's a link that may help you: http://home.comcast.net/~grabblue65/78Bronco.html
As far as u-joints goes they are different part numbers but you may be able to piece or buy off set u-joints in order to mate two different style together. I have an offset u-joint in my 65 mustang. The drive line shop that balanced my drive shaft knew what I needed. Thios saved me from swapping out the rear 9 inch yoke for a different one.
