Fordomatic speedometer cable

I have a 56 F-100 with a 57 312 and fordomatic which were installed by the previous owner. The truck previously had a 302 and auto in it. When I got the truck, the speedo cable was not hooked up and appeared to have the C4 type gear on it. I installed a new cable with the early type end, and it only worked for about a mile. Question 1: how is the gear retained in the housing of the 56 style? Question 2: the manual for the trans shows the gear on the bottom, mine is higher up and angled down, does it take the same cable? I noticed in the T-Bird catalog that 57 Birds may take the later gear. Question 3: how can I tell the difference? Or, what the heck cable do I need?
