I'm no mechanic, but mine seems to run fine. I can cruise the interstate and it shifts quite nicely. Granted mine only has 79,000 miles on it but still, I think it does it's job. I haven't really "floored" it, so I'm not sure how well it shifts into first from drive(it usually starts in 2nd unless you give it more than 3/4) throttle. Hope this helps, -4speed
Do it, you'll never look back. It really makes driving her relaxing, you just push down on the gas and go. Plus the overdrive is always a plus. -4speed
If you can find a Dual Range Ford-o-Matic or a Cruise-o-Matic you'll like it even more.
Ford-o-Matic Single Range always is in second as you depress the Throttle, then it will shift into third. If you wish to use first you must do one of two things in order to do so. Put the shift lever into Low & then shift manually into second or Depress the Throttle all the way to the Throttle Stop at which point it will ingage. You DO NOT have to Stomp on it in order to acheeve this, just depress as you would normally untill it hits the Throttle Stop.
F-o-M Dual Range has Low, D1 & D2. Low is just that. D1 you have 1st, 2nd & 3rd. D2 you just have 2nd & 3rd.
C-o-M as I remember it is similar to the C-4 in operation. You just need the Original C-o-M's Shift linkage for it to work properly or purchase one of the Universal Shift Linkage Kits for it.

Thanks for the reply, Thanks for clearing this up I was confused about the different ones. The one I would want would be a Dual Range ford o matic or the C-o-M. Is their any way to id them from just looking at them? Would their be any #s or tags on the transmission?
There are I.D. Plates on the left side of the tranny that has the Combination in order to I.D. what it is.
As soon as I get my Books back from Fathers mechanic I can tell you what to look for.

I just purchased a '56 F100 with Fordomatic and a Y-block. The engine number indicates that it's a '57 312.
Does one of you have technicals on the '50's Fordomatic or whatever other trans it may be? I'd like to determine what my transmission is and, among other things, wiring up the neutral safety switch.
There is a I.D. Plate on the Drivers Side of the Transmission that'll have a Series of Letters & Numbers that'll be needed in Order to give you that Intele.
So if you'll find & post them My book on Transmissions well have them.
