I have an ’03 Super Crew with the 4.6 engine. It has about 34,000 miles and runs fine. My only complaint is that the truck just doesn’t have the power that I would prefer. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with the engine, but it is just small for the weight of the truck. I am not in to hot-rodding the vehicle, but wonder if there is anything which could reasonably be done to add power without seriously affecting longevity, drivability or gas mileage? I don’t want to smoke my tires, but am more interested in greater power at highway speeds. Thanks for any comments.
He means Cold Air Intake. KN makes one. There's a few others. They basically flow more air in.
I don't care for KN's filter type. But they have a nice smooth elbow piece. There's another company I like a bit better because it uses the stock air box, but replaces the plumbing and filter. Can't recall the name right now though.
But the best you can hope for is adding a CAI, dual exhaust like a Flowmaster Single In Dual Out, then add in a programmer. That last one will change your timing and shift points to help out. Also, power will depend on whether you use the 87 octane tune vs a 92 octane tune.
After that, you're into big bucks, relatively speaking. Head/intake/valve work, maybe larger MAF. Not sure if they make a supercharger maybe for the 4.6. Stuff like that. Stuff that in my opinion, you're just better off trading this truck in for a 04+ F150. Go from 225? HP to 300HP.
