I'm swaping my D-30 for a D-44 cause it's stronger and has 4.11 gears for 33" tires, but I cannot get the Drums off. I prayed them with PB blaster hit them with a sledge hammer till it broke then I hit them with a wood splitter.they didn't break loose.
You need to disconnect the brake line, unbolt the entire assembly and remove it. Then you knock the wheel studs out through the back. Then you can take it apart.
mine just slid right off! make sure the pads on the inside aren't holding! i have had that problem with rears... if possible crank it up and let the brakes release and see if you can get it free.
i have also seen ford use small lock rings of sorts on drums for some odd reason! had to pull them off first and then it was cake getting the drums off!
They really shouldn't slide off. The old style D44 from EB's was lug centric. That means the studs are what centers your rims. The newer ones are hub centric.
If the drums have never been off you need to drive the studs through the hub. From the factory the whole hub had to be removed to access the brake pads. Since that was a lame design mechanics always drive the studs through the hubs and remove the lip that makes the drum non-removable.
Place a lugnut you dont want on the stud and run it down a ways and whack away with an eningeers hammer.
Sometimes the drums will rust to the flange on the inside of the hub. If they've never been off, I'd just replace them anyhow, but that lip is a pain in the a$$. You can never use too much PB, that stuff's the best thing since the breaker bar.
