vacuum causing problems?????

Hey all,

Love my 1972 F-100, 302
I have my truck all back together now after a complete valve job, and it runs smooooth at idle. When I rev it up a bit, it start missing out and running rough (in Park). When I took off my vacuum lines to the Distrib to check my timing with my light, it purrs at all RPMS... Why is my vacuum advance causing this problem? I am sooo close to having my baby purrfect, this is making me a little nuts. Thanks Mike

vacuum causing problems?????

WEll guys,

I tried both suggestions,
The plate inside my distib seems to be moving ok, and it seems to be working properly, and my ground wires are all attached properly, but still no luck.
My 72 302, has 2 vacuum lines. I'm guessing 1 to pull, 1 to push...
the come from the carb choke side, and the other from the back of the intake manifold...where would I find another vacuum source that isn't occupied?
or any other suggestions?

Post vacuum causing problems?????

well, I have a Motorcraft carb 2 bbl, but not sure exactly what model.
I checked my point gap, timing, and mixture/idle screws...all ok. The vacuum line that goes from my carb (near the auto choke) to the front of my distrib seems to be the problem.
when I pull it fro the distrib and plug it with my finger, it runs smooth. I am trying to find another port to try to get vacuum from...no luck..maybe I'm missing something?

Do you mean : You pull the vacuum line and then plug IT or you plug the vacuum port on the carb?

The ported vacuum is on the right front of the carb below the choke housing.
Do you have a vacuum gauge ?

I pull the vacuum line off of the distrib, the one that goes to the carb, and plug the line itself. I have a vacuum guage. What exaclty would I be looking for?

Pull the vacuum line off the vacuum port on the carb and replace it with the vacuum gauge hose.

At idle, there shouldn't be any vacuum >

Now, Rev it up and vacuum SHOULD appear < Thus being a ported vacuum line.

Have you tested the vacuum advance mechanism ?

get a vacuum gun ,place the hose on the vacuum advance port and watch to see if the arm on the advance pulls on the mechanism.

Post vacuum causing problems?????

I have to go out of town for awhile, so it seems my old truck willhave to sit unfinshed for a couple of weeks.
as a quick fix, I just pulled the carb vacuum line off of the distrib and shoved a golf tee in there to seal it. (like when you are using a timing light) but the other line I left atached to the distrib. I ran it about 40 miles today, and other than a slight hesitation taking off from stop signs (after it gets warm) it runs fine. I wonder if this isnt a choke problem? since that is where this vacuum line comes from..
