I have a 98 Ranger (3.0, 5-spd) with 157,000 plus on the clock. I have been using 10-30 in the summer and 5-30 in the winter since I have owned it. It still gets 24 MPG doesnt use any oil at all between changes. I will not be switching over this coming winter. It sleeps inside at night, and everything else that I own uses 10-30 year around.
I have a 2001 Ranger XLT V6 flex-fuel with 90,000 miles. I have used 5w-20 since day one, is it save to use 5w-30 now that it has 90,000 miles.
If engine is still tight and not consuming large amounts of oil, stick to the 5w20. VAlvoline has just introduced a 5w20 grade of the MAx Life oil for engines over 75K. I would use that before going up to a 30 weight.

I use 5w-20 in my 164,000 mile 2.3L Ranger year round. Switching to a 30 weight oil just because the engine has a few miles on it won't make any appreciable difference. I look at using heavier oils in older engines just as a bandaid anyway. By the time you start needing to dump 20w-50 in a engine built to today's tolerances because the oil pressure starts dropping a bit from worn bearings, its probably time to replace those bearings before the rods start knocking.
