I am just getting over a broken foot and can finally start fixin my truck up. I have a 70 F250 camper special xlt w/stock 360 w/ 155,000 miles. It has a blown head gasket (I hope that's all) and while I am that deep I thought I might as well add some performance goodies. I am thinking of headers, alu. intake and 4 barrel. I have a good holley 600 but I do not know what brand headers and brand and type of intake to get. I will try to find used stuff as well because I am on a budget, plus the wife does not like me spending too much on vehicles. Any help would be appreciated.
I would suggest the Edelbrock Performer intake if you are going to leave cam alone. If you are going to up it much more than .525" total lift then you might wanna go with the Performer RPM. Headers are readily availible. You could go with stans headers(a try-Y design), FPP headers(another try-Y), Headman(long tube), or Hooker Header(another long tube). That is about it ofr headers. A good cam would be a good Idea right now also. Some thing rather small. Like a RV cam or something similar. Can't think of an acctual cam right now. I have been looking at rather large cams. The Ebock performer cam and intake might be a thought though. I think you can get them both for under $400 for cam, intake, and intake install kit. I hope this helps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Jul-02 AT 06:58 AM (EST)]If your on a budget, you might be better off with the cast iron GT 'S' code intake. It can be had for <$50 and offers good performance.
You can id them by the 1" 'S' on the #1 runner just behind the water neck. the runners are higher up that the standard intakes.
I'd spend $100 on a cam and then do some clean up work on the heads (remove exhaust humps and smooth the bowls near the valve)
Then when you get the headers, do a trial match. I found my Hooker super comps to off and had to oblong the holes 1/8" to get a proper match with the ports.
The Performer and Performer RPM are in the 250~300 range and I've never seen a good deal on a used one (I've looked for years).
I think I'm a little confused, are you saying you want to "beef-up" a motor with 155,000 miles on it? If so, I'd personally save the money spent on headers and an intake and completely rebuild the motor. Dollar for dollar, you'll be much better off in the long run. Then when the budget allows, install a nice aluminum intake. I'd bag the header idea unless you plan on installing Sanderson's (~$300) and just run a nice set of duals from the manifolds (unless you plan on racing your truck......but then you'd probably have to get rid of the 360....).
