air intake

Serviced my drop in K&N today and couldn't get the cover back on. Have always had problems in the past, could get only one screw fastener back in but now neither one. I'm thinking it's about time to get rid of all that wasted plastic and get into another intake system. I read on here somewhere that a few people bought their parts separately and only cost around $80 all together(not sure if they included the filter price). I've seen one on my buddie's gas pickup, seemed pretty simple. Anybody know where I should start, what parts I need, where to get them, preferred filter, how long it might take because I can't find that forum that I read. Thanks in advance!

You really need to toss that stock setup. Most people here have made their own like you said with a napa air filter part number 6637 and clamped it to a 4" piece of exhaust tubing. Check out my gallery

or you can go with a tymar setup

yep what foemanES said. i built my own tymar intake and was less than $130 all together. it uses the napa 6637which when i bought mine was the donaldson filter reboxed. check my gallery for pics.

you are right in wanting to get rid of the stock box. stock box= junk, stock box +kn= really big junk

Where are you located? I went to a performance shop for trucks and speed and asked them for a 4" pipe with a 45 degree bend in it. They had a chrome one for $140. They told me to check at a local exhaust shop that does some big truck work and I went there and he ordered one next day for me for $30(longer one). Then I went to a hydraulic hose shop and bought a 4" marine exhaust coupler and that came with 4 T-band clamps. It took ten minutes to install and really helps a lot. I would call around and ask muffler shops if they do any big truck work.

So I see that nobody leaves the stock front air inlet, I'm guessing it's not needed after the mod. Also, when attached to the 4" tube, the filter doesn't need to be secured anywhere else, the tube is enough support for it, without the filter bouncing around? Also, looks like some people attach the filter to the 4" tube directly and some attach the filter to the stock boot. Does it make any difference in which way I mount it? One more question, will the filter get wet? If not, I wonder why they even make boxes for filters.

I have seen a few guys leave that inlet thing on but I think it looks funny.

This filter is BIG. It can be put on with just a 6-8" piece of strait exhaust tubing, it fits snug between the fuse box on the battery. If you get a 45 degree bend in your tubing it makes it fit in there a little better.

I like mounting the new filter on a piece of tubing because there is no chance of it comming off. Make sure you get a good clamp for your filter (I think mine was an exhaust clamp)

Ya the filter will get wet but I think there is a protective water proof coating on it. Stock intake systems are designed to reduce engine noise.

But whatever you do it will seal and filter 100x better than your stock setup, esp. with a k&n.

One of the selling points of the Tymar intake setup is the metal stand that keeps the filter from rubbing on the fiberglass fender liner. The 'glass will plug up the bottom of the filter. I did the 6637 after removing the stock box w/ K&N drop-in, then put in Dale's unit after discussing the setup with him while ordering the 4" exhaust. RE; water... Donaldson filters like those from Tymar have the waterproof paper.

I just ordered my 6637 through fleetfilter and went to airflo.com like 1997-F350 said but couldn't find an intake tube with a 45*, just straight 4". Any suggestions?

you will need to cut the enlarged end off of the 45* when you get it. if you need a link to the right one let me know.

where in WA you at?

I'm in Spokane, the lady from airflo called me and informed me that they are in spokane so I'll just pick it up. They have the 45* with similiar ends so I shouldn't have to cut at all and I'll pick up the clamp there too. How did you post a picture next to your username? I figured out how to put my truck in my gallery.
