I have a Edelbrock 600cfm with electric choke on my 79 F100 (302 engine). Lately, I am having a hard time taking the truck out of fast idle. I checked and saw that the electric choke is getting 5V when truck is running. Although I know it is normal to stomp on the accelerater to take off fast idle, I noticed that mine gets stuck again after it is off of fast idle. Do I simply back off the fast idle screw to cure this problem? I do not know if there is something else going on here.
An edelbrock electric choke should be 12 volts. That's one problem. If the 5 volts is not enough to open the choke and move all the proper linkage it could get stuck on the fast idle cam for longer than necessary. I have a Carter AFB and had the opposite problem but I have it fixed. Mine would not fast idle. In my case the choke was not connected at all and the linkage and choke were not adjusted correctly. Once the choke is open when adjusted correctly a little blip of the pedal will drop the fast idle for me. Check out the Edelbrock site for a manual. There are instructions for set up and adjustment.
Good luck
I thought the instructions that came with the carb said 5V. I will check though and post back. Maybe that could be my problem. How warm the engine has to get before you can take it off fast idle? Should I be able to take it off fast idle just after a few seconds of starting?
Mine will drop down from fast idle the first time I hit the gas. It could be 5 seconds or 5 minutes after starting. The idea is to keep the idle up to warm the cold engine as I'm sure you know.
