my dad has a 2000 ranger with automatic tranny..here is the symptom/when it is cold it shifts fine, then as it heats up from 1st to 2nd gear it will bang and the o/d light starts to flash..but if engine is shut off it will then shift ok a few times and do same thing over again.what could the problem be? can codes be pulled for the tranny?all replies are greatly appreciated!
Maybe I should have worded that better, it sounds similar to the symtoms of a bad VSS sensor.....kind of, from what I have experienced and what I have read other experiencing it seems more consistent once one has gone bad, I have not heard of one that had the ok shifting while cold and then warming up and malfunctioning, but anything is possible. Very inexpensive and easy fix if that is the issue, they are generally around $25, located on the top of the rear diff, one nut to unscrew and a connector to unplug.
i replaced the vss sensor..still have the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd.. is there a way i can pull the codes without a scanner?
Um, noppers. You need a scanner for an 00 (OBDII). Some of the earlier 5R55E trannies (I don't know what you have since no engine size posted)experienced failure of the valve body to tranny body casting gasket; loss of correct fluid pressure equated to goofy shifts. IIRC, there is a TSB that addresses this.
Hey I was assuming you were going to try and pull the code, sorry I should have said something about that. You can take it to any Autozone and they will scan it for you if there is a CEL, or has been one on resently.
i drove the truck for the 1st time last night in a week, shifted fine, when it got hot is bangs when shifting into 1st and 2nd..then o/d light comes on.also it won't downshift into 1st when i stop at a light,it will start off in 2nd/but if i manually put it in 1st it will then go.i went to auto zone, they told me they cannot scan for transmission codes
You got me then, I thought if you had a CEL they could read it. Guess a tranny shop or repair shop for diagnosis is next? Bummer man, post up when you find out what the problem is, good luck -
