Hi, i was lookin for a good begginers guitar that would last a while and plays, sounds good. what do yall have/ like that wount bankrupt me? ~500 or less. preferably ~300. also check out my thread on guitar strings.
Check out the Alvarez line. They make some pretty affordable guitars that sound pretty good. Look for a solid spruce top, if you can find one within your budget. It would be worth biting the bullit for a solid top for a couple of hundred bucks. Much better sound.
I had an Alverez with a ply top that sounded surprisingly good. A friend of mine has an Alverez with a solid spruce top and it sounds REAL good. I think he told me it was around 500 bucks.
Also, if you can swing like maybe 900 bucks, Martin has a lower line guitar, I think it is Mahogony. Real soft and easy to scratch but sounds Super Good for the price. (on edit): I just called my buddy with that Mahogany style Martin that sounds so good for the price. It was a D-15 and was around 800 dollars. Great sounding guitar.
Good luck and Happy pickin. It's great therapy.
It's my other love, next to my wife.

Takamine makes some suprisingly good for around that price range. I think the E series are around $250. Also a low end Taylor is around $400. It's not exactly a Martin but it's still a very nice guitar. I played a friend of mine's Taylor and loved it but I'm not ready to give up my Martin.
Learn a couple of chords (with proper finger position) on a borowed one, then go and find a store that'll let you try a bunch out, new and used. Find on that fits your hands well...I found that there are some high quality ones I couldn't play well no matter what, and some cheapo ones that fit me much better.
If necessary, spend extra dough on one that'll work for you...it'll make learning and playing much more enjoyable, and easier to stick to.
The above advice came to me from my bro in law, a recent Grammy winning guitarist, and instructor extrarordinare.

True, a guitar is a personal choice. They all have their own personality so to speak. Whatever one fits you is the match. Definately good advice to learn a couple of cords and find one that feels and sounds right for you.
Don't be surprised if your taste changes as you progress in your learning though. That's when you go out and buy a Martin or Taylor or whatever is right at that time. But do check out those Alverez'. Definately check out the Takemine line too. Those are always nice. I have a 12 string Takemine that has a warm sound and like her.
E1p1, congrats to your brother in law. Who might he be? Just curious. Kinda cool having celebrity relation here on FTE.
