I have the same problem in my 00. It is more of a noise than a vibration, but it has just started recently. It occurs just like you have described. Can't seem to pinpoint it. Did anyone find the problem? and how much movement in the carrier bearing is okay?
I know this is an old post but this is exactly what my 00 SD crewcab 4x4 dually with a 6spd is doing. I've checked u-joints and the carrier bearing but look fine. I feel this vibration in the floor board when I go 30 - 40 mph in 3rd or 4th gear but only when I accelerate. When I left off the gas, it goes away. At highway speed, around 65 -75 mph, there is no vibration. Also, I can hear it, like a low gear humming noise that increases until I get above 40 mph. Please let me know if anybody has figured out the cause and fix.
I have the 2002 4x4 with level kit. (2in) lift. I had a vibration after I put springs in the rear. It raised the back 2 more inches. What is was was the carrier bearing angle was off. so the driveline were in a slight bind. Put a solid piece of steel 1in thick as a spacer to drop the carrier bearing and problem was solved for pennies. Do you have a Lift of any kind?
Lusty
Hi Stampede. No, it doesn't have lift, just stock suspension. The rear springs don't look like there sagging. It's going to the shop for ball joint replacement tomorrow and I'm having them check for the cause.
This may not be the cause but lately I had a vibration that sounded as though it was coming from the firewall behind the steering wheel while driving but most noticeable while idling, I looked and tried to see what was causing this and it turned to frustration. I then got under the truck and found that the 4" exhaust was laying against the upper bolt on the transmission crossmember. I took a screwdriver and wedged the exhaust over and retightened the clamps, abra-cadabra the vibration was gone. The truck is a 2000 f250 ext. 4x4 7.3 w 6spd. I hope it is as easy as this to fix yours. Todd
Hi Todd. Thanks for the reply. I checked the exhaust, which is stock, and all is fine. Drove it to work today and there was no vibration. Strange. All I did was wash it the day before. Mainly washed the body and sprayed around the front axle to get all the dead bug guts. One thing I noticed was that I got this vibration on a cold night driving to work but today it was around the mid 70's and no vibration. The engine runs fine and this vibration is felt in the floor board and it only does it around 30 - 40 mph in 3rd or 4th gear. I almost want to think that maybe it's a transmission mount that is wearing out or deteriorating. Rob
That definately sounds like a U-Joint. Cold, grease is dry and brittle, warm, it is flowing. You cannot check them by looking, get a screwdriver and pry. If it is not the joint, look at the slip joint. It may need cleaned and greased.
I have the same problem with my 02.
Exactly the same as the OP descibed.
Ive checked everything thats been mentioned and I still have the vibration.
Can hear it and feel it.
my 02 crew cab doing same thing, seems to be worse right as torque converter unlocked, what really made it worse was hypertech chip or pulling a trailer it sounded like a wooden chair was being pushed across a wood floor. definately seems engine or torque conveter related because i can see the vibration in my 4x4 shifter, at idle, driving, coasting in neutral, reving up motor in park, etc.its not a very bad vibration but even my wife asked what it was. i havent really noticed it being bad lately as torque converter unlocks but i took programmer out, stopped pulling trailer and been driving like a pansy
